Forums - Microsoft Discussion - I'm starting to give up on Phil Spencer...

Wow a little defensive are we? I only used the term as it was obviously more wanted than a remaster of a 13 year old game.

Hardly anyone cared about this game back in the day. No one asked for this game to made remade whatever. The way you put it tripped me out. There's more well received games back then that were and still being asked to be revived and Spencer picked that.

Definitely this! If people really care about the game they would download and play the remaster that was given out for free. If people aren't even interested in that, why waste money on a reboot? If they want to remake an old Xbox game how about Crimson Skies? That's the one game I look forward to from the OG BC. They need to make a new one already!

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

Man were we wrong to expect everything to change when he took over from Don Mattrick. Instead of things getting better by the year, it seems to get worse.

Phil Spencer was wrong for the job from the start. He knows nothing and looks uncomfortable all the time.

I think Phil knows whats popular with hardcore gamers, he knows cult classics like Phantom Dust, Crimson Skies and Lost Odyssey, but the Xbox division isn't getting the necessary fundings anymore from higher ups. He wished he could make sequels in those series, but the money just isn't there. The Xbone doesnt do well saleswise and new types of metrics like Maus were introduced to make it seem Xbox is doing better than ever. Their games are being put on Windows to make up for the loss in Xbox install base. The Xbox division is on a tight leash. MS higher ups want sure fire hits, no more risks. Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, J Allard, Peter Moore, those guys were different than the new ones.

It's bad and it will get worse today after Sony conference Lmao

Where is the marketing team? Xbox one x?

Seriously?

Well with Phil lets see here

Cancelled games like Phantom Dust, Fable Legends, and Scalebound.

Killed any reason to get an Xbox One by giving us Playanywhere

Promises but under delivers more times then Peter Molyneux

Learned nothing from the Xbone Launch by having the most expensive console on the market.

Has yet to successfully launch a new franchise.

+ no (big) japanese rpgs/exclusiv-games. I miss that, the x360 was much better.

My question to Phil Spencer: What is more important to you: New large exclusive games ("AAA games") or backward compatibility? I have the feeling the answer is clear, backward compatibility -.-

Fans could come up with requests and BC was one of the most popular requests. So you can't condemn him for doing that.

But so help me god, if E3 2018 is as bad as this one, I will never, ever, invest in this brand, because I honestly feel like MS is treating it like it is dying. I will buy Playstation (in case you didn't know, I bought a PS3 at launch, so yes, I was into that bramd at one point), or maybe a PC, but I will not look back.

This is why I'm invested in multiple consoles. There isn't a single company giving me everything I want.

Hey now you get your logical thought process out of here!

Seriously though, I agree.  No reason to focus solely on one console or platform these days.

Tomb Raider was heading in the direction it's at now before Uncharted came around. Play TR Anniversary :)

As if Sony invented the narrative driven action game anyway LOL.

Not true. Not true at all.  Crystal Dynamics admitted that that Sony took inspiriation from their Tomb Raider (and killswitch and RE4) so they could take inspiration from their game as well. It creates competition. I mean, EA's Dantes inferno was a reskinned God of War. Literally.....even Mega 64 made fun of it because it was such a blatant rip off.  Star Wars the force unleashed and Star wars 1313? Rip offs of Uncharted and God of War. Thats how big and influential those games were last gen. Phil Spencer admitted that they paid for timed exclusivity of Tomb Raider because they tried to make a game that resembled Uncharted and did not like the results of the venture. They paid for Tomb Raider to have a rival combatant game on equal footing. You can look this up. Its still on the net. You think Phil SPencer was payhing for nay other kind of Tomb Raider that didnt look like Uncharted, you would have to be kidding me. The rumor for EA as well is that they are using her on storyline for a Star Wars project (most likely the resurfacing of Star Wars 1313) because she was responsible for Uncharteds amazing story.

Taking inspiration from a series is not the same as copying. One is inherantly negative, as you can see with how you're describing Dante's Inferno, the other is something that literally happens all the time in the industry, as you can see with how you're saying Naughty Dog took inspiration from Tomb Raider. Which begs the question, if you can admit Uncharted took inspirations from Tomb Raider, then why is it some big deal that CD took inspirations from Uncharted? You say it as if it signifies something special about the Sony games that don't happen elsewhere, then go on to say Sony games do the same thing. So then, who cares? Developers take inspiration from other games all the time. lol, how many times in this thread are you going to say something negative about a particular company or game because of something and then trump up Sony, when Sony is "guilty" of the same thing? First it was ending a conference with a third party game, now it's taking inspiration from other games. Ever heard of SOCOM 4? Sony made Zipper try to make a Call of Duty SOCOM game and it failed miserably and they shut the studio down. These are businesses whose chief goal is to make money. Of course they're going to take elements from big games and put their own spin on them in their own games. It's how every business works. It's the same in books, TV, music, movies, etc.

LOL @ the Xboss part regarding Tomb Raider. You do realize when he said they wanted a game like Uncharted on Xbox, he's talking about a high quality, popular action title, yes? He's not saying he wants an Uncharted clone. Jeebus dude, sometimes your reaching for negative things to say about MS just end up being hilarious.

Now when Don Mattrick was replaced by Phil Spencer back in 2014, I was giddish. The guy who actually brought us the games... games! He was now the head of Xbox, and I honestly thought things were looking great.

E3 2014 comes, and we see Scalebound, Crackdown 3, Sunset Overdrive, Fable Legends, Ori, and plenty of great 3rd parties. Well today, 2 of those are canceled, and one of them still isn't released. But oh how little we knew...

E3 2015 comes along, and we hear of Xbox 360 B/C!!! HOLY SHIT! That probably won them the conference, but we also had Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5, Rare Replay (holy shit), Cuphead, Sea of Thieves, Recore, Forza 6, and even some GOW 4 gameplay! Well Rise of the Tomb Raider today is a PS4 and PC game, Halo 5, Rare Replay and Forza 6 were decent, Cuphead and Sea of Thieves still hasn't been released, and GOW 4 wasn't out till the end of 2016. So not spectacular overall (in hindsight), but at least we had a big megaton! Probably the best conference they had.

2016 starts with shock. Fable Legends is cancelled, and Lionhead closes down. I honestly couldn't believe it. They had been there almost since the beginning, and now they were gone. I didn't know what to believe, except that MS probably thought Fable was going poorly, and decided to scrap the whole project and liquidate the studio. I was unhappy, but that was only the beginning.

E3 2016, and it is a little bit eh. Yeah, we see GOW4 (which was announced the year before) and Forza Horizon 3, but those were expected. We saw more Recore gameplay (once again, a game already announced), as well as Scalebound (which is cancelled now), so overall not that great (though Halo Wars 2 was a welcoming inclusion). Scorpio announcement was great, but overall a big step down from 2015, and honestly disappointing.

So it is 2017. We see Scalebound cancelled, and now I really start to get mad. Its been 3 years, and 2 major titles from 2014 are gone! I was mad, but I held my head and hoped for an amazing E3...

...that we never got.

E3 2017 was by far the biggest mix of disappointment you could imagine. Instead of giving us new first party IPs, we see a slew of 3rd party timed exclusives that are either already on PC or are indie titles. For the whole year, we have 3 AAA exclusive titles (and thats if you count PC). We've gone from a slew of great games to just 3. We didn't see any surprise 343 announcement (which we were told of), we didn't see the "greatest lineup of gaves", we only saw disappointment. To make things worse, the Scorpio was announced with a $500 ($600 CAD) price tag. So you have a powerful console, but with no first party titles to show it off. Terrible, just terrible. This was by far their worst E3 since 2013, and honestly I really can't defend it.

And at the heart of this is Phil Spencer. Now I use to feel a little sympathy for his positon - being in a company were higher ups can end you at any moment, it sucks. But over his 3 year tenure at the brand, we've seen a gradual DECLINE in the amount of games we see, we've seen major studios CLOSE under his direction, exclusives have been cancelled...

...it goes on and on. The terrible mistake of announcing a 2nd console at $500, even though they KNEW the Xbox One did horrible at that price point makes me wonder what MS was thinking. The reason I don't say you Phil is because of your reaction to the announcement, you knew it was too expensive, and you tried to shove it to the side.

In the end, Phil is nothing but a corporate mouthpiece. He won't stand up for the brand like Peter Moore did, and he certainly won't try to do what gamers want. But, I will give you ONE more chance Phil. One more chance to prove that you can do this brand right. E3 2018. And I will know for certain if your years at Xbox did shit.
