Huh? That would be rating it properly.

I feel like the reviewers might actually do Nintendo's new IP justice this time, as unlike Splatoon ARMS is less reliant on the free dlc since it already has a solid amount of content and variety from the get go, so there's nothing to offset the amazing gameplay with. Beyond that it doesn't look like there are any significant flaws with the game, so I could see it getting enough 10s to reach the 90s.

No, it wouldn't be rating it properly, because absolutely nothing about this game screams 90+ outside of the character design.

Splatoon did well because it filled a gap in Nintendo's library; team-based shooters. It had all the necessary Nintendo quirks/quality and was a genre that had been demanded. But Arms? But nice is that trying to fill for Nintendo? Fighting? Smash Bros has that covered.

Amazing gameplay screams 90+ to me.

That there is a most improper way to rate games. A game is not suddenly worse due to the existence of other games in it's genre, nor is it magically better due to the absence of other games in it's genre. I mean that makes absolutely no sense at all.

Splatoon didn't get a 90+ Metacritic score though, so I'm curious as to what reviewers fear now that they didn't fear two years ago.

Jim Sterling and Zelda is irrelevant because Zelda fans have been like that for a long time, as detailed here.  Not all Nintendo games get defensive reactions like that, especially not new franchises. Unless you think it's a phenomenon that'll be unique to the Switch?

And the gameplay screams 82-86 for me.

While that would still be a great score, I have to wonder if you've truely looked at it. We know you like to judge games based on things that are completely irrelevant to the game itself afterall. I think people are believing it can't reach 90 simply because the game is not overly ambitious or an established n popular franchise. Perhaps I'm too optimistic here, but I'm hoping reviewers understand that those things have nothing to do with a game's quality.

Lots of studios would

Lots of people have fun crazy ideas, like Rocket League.

What they wouldn't do is charge 60 dollars, as if it was an AAA game, and still get a pass by reviewers
