Not a chance.

Even though at least three of the great Japanese games were built after using feedback from two Western devs... CD Projekt and Bethesda...

Even the classic Dragon Quest, which popularized the JRPG genre, was influenced by Western games like Wizardry and Ultima.

Some amazing japanese games have come out recently making this probably my favorite year in gaming, loving every single one ive played till now and i still have many to play yet, (im getting every game in that thumbnail)... once im done with Nier Automata im moving to Nioh, then Persona 5, then Tokyo Xanadu and finally Trails of Cold Steel 2.

And hopefully by the time im done with everything i will already have a Switch so... Zelda time after that.

EDIT: kinda forgot to answer to the OP, the majority of japanese games are still pretty much behind western games, though part of it is due to smaller budgets though thats not always the case... just look at FFXV versus The Witcher 3 or Horizon.

Japanese games have always been good but the west is finally seeing it. Also, Japanese games aren't glitchy when they're released. That's the biggest thing western devs could learn from Japanese devs.

That's revisionist history right there. You forgot about the time when FF, MGS and RE ruled the world. The truth is that Japanese devs were considered the best and then, during the HD era, floundered. And the only western games that are considered truly glitchy are open world games, which have way bigger scope than most of the Japanese games.

When I think back on what some Japanese devs did before this current year, I can't help but feel a more proper title would be: "How Japanese devs show you can recover from being plain crazy" They weren't always hot stuff before. I don't think praising devs for taking several years to make a good game each is a good thing either (they still had issues even after being released).

Also, I find it pretty funny when they roast Horizon for things that are also present in Breath of the Wild.

Japan has been putting out some exceptional stuff recently (Zelda and Persona 5 in particular are at the peak of their respective spaces), but i don't know if that really counts as them showing western developers "how it's done". Western developers often have very different design goals for their games, and while some of those goals are quite unpopular (as with some Japanese ones), they're just as successful in achieving those goals as Japanese developers are their own.

No. Even though I live in the west and like alot of western games, I refuse to see it with rose colored glasses. My point still stands with the majority of japanese games compared to the majority of western games. Western devs by far and large are more interested in sticking to a release schedule than the quality of the game. Day 1 patches and the games are still buggy as shit. They need to step it up.

Now? Don't be silly

So what was the western masterpeice this year? Or what was the last good western singleplayer in general if you take Sony IPs out?

Horizon: Zero Dawn for the West and Resident EVII and Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the East. I'll include Persona 5 but I haven't played it yet.
