Really weird time for this thread considering the success of Nier Automata and Platinum's PC ports.

I think OP is on about wanting more of those from different devs, other than Platinum.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

I'll tell you why they don't sell so well.

Click, click, click, click. click, click, click, click x10000000. Eventually it kind of wears you down but somehow I trooped through Diablo 1 and 2. I guess that is where I burned out.  Takes as much skill as being a button smasher in Soul Caliber, Tekken or Virtua Fighter.

It was fairly popular in the 16 bit era but was never huge.

You talking about beat them ups like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Final Fight?

From what I've played, they mostly actually are glorified button mashers, but it's nice to play one once in a while. I liked Dante's Inferno and Darksiders... which is getting a second sequel, so it's not like there isn't gonna be any games in the genre.

Well, we also had Nioh, unless that's not considered to be hack 'n slash

Isn't that meant to be more of a Souls clone though?.

Well, it's a quicker-paced than the original Souls games though.

No. Dungeons & Dragon's arcade and similar games. Quite a few of them in arcades then plus some SNES and Genesis games. Golden Axe then yeah as it was hack n slash.

Diablo 3 sold more than 30 million units: https://www.polygon.com/2015/8/4/9097497/diablo-3-sales-30-million-units

Diablo 3 is a dungeon crawler and doesn't have gameplay akin to games being discussed here.

God of War III sold over 6 million on PS3, for an exclusive that isn't measly compared to anything but the biggest franchises. I don't think Santa Monica changed the formula for GoW PS4 just to reach a wider audience, it was time to reinvigorate the long-running franchise and the new gameplay style is exciting.

The action-adventure hack & slash genre has never been huge outside of GoW, it's just a niche genre and it's probably because they are isolated experiences which don't offer much once the, often short, campaigns have been completed unlike highly successful games of other genres which encourage replayability & socialising through online/local multiplayer components.

I love the genre but I'm excited to see its evolution which is what the new GoW represents to me, hopefully it'll inspire developers to create more games in the genre.

They did reinvigorate the franchise which excited me at first, but the combat seems dumbed down and more in line witrh the combat in Western games which is terrible. It isn't a hack and slash game anymore with its slower pace and no combo mechanics and depth, that's not an evolution of a geenre all about the depth of combat. Its a huge step back from the previous  God of War games especially 3. Its only being praised by people who don't care about gameplay mechanics and only want emotional stories and likeable protognist even if its a cliche nowadays.

I'm still excitedfor it but not that much. I was though when it was revealed and I'm glad that the series might finallty be as popular as it deserves to be, but now I realise that this isn't the same series that I felt was underappreciated. This one is in line with Naughty Dog games which I find overrated. And hack and slash games are about replaying the campaigns at higher difficulties when you've unlocked more weapons and skills and I've played some hack and slash games for over a 100 hours. The genre isn't suitable for online gameplay.

You clearly don't understand how deep the combat systems are in these games. On lower difficulties you can get away with button mashing like in fighting games but just like fighting games there is an incredibly deep and rewarding experience if you understand and master the combat and there can be  avariety of ways in which you can do that in a good hack and salsh game.

Go play Devil May Cry 3 on hard and try button mashing. You'll get your ass handed to you :)

You've played the worst games in the genre in terms of combat mechanics.

Play Devil May Cry 3, Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta, those are anything but button mashers. Look at my reply to the guy right above you.
