Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Polygon: The Nintendo Switch has become the system people love to love

I'm happy for the Switch's success, but talk about laying it on thick...

I get your point, but their gaining then losing 150m customers in 1 generation certainly wasn't typical :p

It's silly for someone to say those markets can't be tabbed again though. They've not disappeared, just moved. All it would take to bring them "back" is a product that appeals to them. I'm sceptical that the Switch will be that system (so far its success seems about what i'd expect from a combination of Nintendo's traditional home and handheld market appeal), but it's certainly not impossible.

For some reason Sony's losses in that shift aren't discussed much either. Both Nintendo's presence in the home console market and Sony's in the handheld market were effectively wiped out in a single generation, and little of those huge losses translating in gains for their competition. That's pretty nuts.

C'mon, they lost more like 180 million customers. Endless downplaying of Nintendo around here.

On a more serious note, I realize that they did indeed "lose" those customers and I do pretty much agree with everything you said. What I was mainly using that point for, though, is that people use that as a remark to actually downplay success. Just because Nintendo was able to find a blue ocean but couldn't find it another time (because of their piss-poor execution and overall stupidity) doesn't mean that the first time they found it was any less of a major success, which is what people always seem to try to make it be.

Yeah, it being used as a negative against Nintendo has always struck me as silly. They might have eventually lost those customers, but they're the only ones to get them in those numbers in the first place. It lead to them having a generation so successful that it's not unreasonable to think it'll remain the record until past the point the traditional console market dies. Them not sustaining that for a 2nd generation doesn't negate the achievement of the first.

I think it mostly stems from the idea that being a "core" gamer makes you better than a "casual" one. The groups do become progressively more distinct the further from the centre you move, but ultimately Sony, MS, and Nintendo don't care what you are as long as you're buying their stuff :p

Yep, I completely switched my perspective. Nintendo has a winner as long as they keep putting out great games.

My 8th gen collection

The acclaim is just out of this world.

I've definitely come to really love it, and the portability. I took it in the kitchen when waiting for a pizza to cool, and I brought it to the library to play with friends.

I'm just overly paranoid of people stealing it when I bring it to school, haha

Good on Nintendo, its the only console from them that im seriously considering in buying but that has nothing to do with the hardware, its all about Zelda for me and i just hope they take more risks and do more new IPs this gen since ive never been a fan of most of their games, and the only ones i cared for and used to play a lot (Pokemon and Mario) i stopped caring about a long time ago, the only other games i really want are Xenoblade 2 (asuming its as good as the first game) and Monster Hunter... and maybe No More Heroes 3 but just maybe i would need to see some gameplay and it would have to impress me a lot.

It's really great how they just turned around the situation. They did a great job and worked hard and I'm happy they now reap the success from it. Congratulations, Nintendo.

I knew people were going to love this because I have been doing this with my Vita and PS4 for 3 1/2 years now. Having the ability to play current AAA games anywhere you are is extreamly pleasing. Hopefully, this will push Sony and Microsoft to get mobile versions of the PS4 and XBO to the market in once 7nm fabrication makes that kind of power possible in a mobile.

I would love to see Switch signal a change in the times, and a move away from Android and iOS. Apple and Google have been the worst market leaders I have seen in my 25 years following mobile tech. The complete lack of innovation and variety over the last decade and even more so in the last 5 years since they really locked down the market, are about as sad of an event as I have ever seen in technology. Hopefully a potion of the industry can swing back in favor of companies that turn profits into new exciting eye opening tech.

There are some huge difrences with Switch compared to Vita+PS4, obvious one is Switch is one device while you need to buy Vita and PS4, not all PS4 games could be played remotely on Vita, requires good Internet connection so you couldn't play anywhere, Vita does not offer local multiplayer on one screen, Vita has less buttons...but one biggest strength of Switch is that is so practical, you go in second from home console mode to handheld mode, in second from handheld to tabletop mode, in second you can play local multiplayer on the go, all those things work great. Basically like Nintendo said, play like ever you want, wherever you want, whenever you want, with anyone you want.

Hardly we will see this with PS4/XB1 in near future (next 4-5 years), PS4/XB1 hardware will hardly fit in small factor and batter life will be huge issue in any case.

Nintendo will definitely have multiple versions of Switch, similar like they has with 3DS family.

I don't get the love for it. It feels like Nintendo dropped another generation behind.

From article its very simple to see why Switch gets love, you probably don't get Switch love because you look only power side, and power doesnt defines new generation and you have great console and great games even without big power. Switch with its concept definitely looks like next gen device.

Very nice article.
