Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sells 459,000 copies on launch day in US, fastest-selling Mario Kart in the US.

Didn't they use to release games on Tuesdays? Releasing on a Friday night give 8D a slight edge.

i'm really confused about the shock in the comments so far. It's Mario Kart on a system with only one other big game that released two months ago, of course it's going to sell well

now hopefully Nintendo can sort out the network issues it's apparently having on the game, going to be difficult with how many people must be playing it right now

I don't think it's unreasonably to be surprised by just how well it's done, but some people's shock does seem a bit exaggerated. 45% of US Switch overs buying it day 1 says a lot about who currently owns a Switch, and the time that has passed since its last major release.

Stating such things seems to really ruffle some people's feathers though, which is silly. It doesn't undermine the achievement, it just adds context. It's no different than pointing out that Horizon benefited from a large install-base, or Zelda benefits from being a launch title, or Persona 5 was number 1 in the UK in large part because of a lack of other major releases. Bleh.

I remember a time when all music movies and games were released exclusively on a Tuesday.  Now, Friday seems to be the in thing.

great news!! now more people can enjoy this amazing game

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

460k in one day in the US beating all previous MK titles and with a smaller install base.

And the impugners waited no time to doom and gloom.

It seems silly to describe selective explanations as "doom and gloom" when your own comment is equally selective.

I don't have money to buy it :(, hopefully by mid may!

Also is really impresive that is selling this good, to be honest I didn't see the hype for the game until I saw it running on the console yesterday.

Only Nintendo does Fridays I think. Third parties still mostly go Tuesday. Even on Switch.

Well it's the systems 2nd game.

No it's not. 2nd AAA Nintendo release sure, which is relevant, but those aren't the only games on the system.

I think now is a good time to point out that the best selling PS4 game is a port of the best selling PS3 game.

Consumers are okay paying for the latest and greatest version of incredible games.

GTAV and TLoU Remastered is all the proof I needed to know MK8D was a big seller.

Minecraft is all the proof we need to know graphics don't matter. But I'm getting off topic. Though I guess Minecraft is also a heavily ported game?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.
