Forums - Gaming Discussion - The effects of nostalgia on your gaming preferences?

Now, I don't know about you guys, but I'm a very nostalgic person myself. I very often reminisce about memories I have had in the past, and often think back fondly of them. Now, a huge part of that nostalgia is geared towards video games. Video games have had a huge effect on my life personally, and I really do adore them. I have so many good memories from playing games in the past, it's impossible to not think about them.

Now, another thing is, I've been nostalgic since a pretty young age. It was mainly in December 2010 at the age of 12, and there was a huge snowstorm that closed schools and public transportation, so there was nothing really to do. So, what my brother and I did, was put CDs of our old PS1 games in a CD player for some reason. Much to our surprise,  in some of the games they actually worked! So, we listened to the soundtracks to games like Beyblade and K-1 Grand Prix, and it really made me yearn for the games that I had gotten rid of over the years. That's when I became extremely nostalgic.

A lot of my favourite games were games that I played before that time. Final Fantasy X, the 3 Super Smash Bros. games, TimeSplitters, the first few Smackdown games, Crash Bandicoot 2, Yu-Gi-Oh: Forbidden Memories, Strider 2, Heavy Rain, Street Fighter II, etc. In fact, in my top ten favourite games list, the only one that I played after that date was Metal Gear Solid 2.

Now, that's not to say that I haven't enjoyed any games that I've played since then. On the contrary. It's just that it seems like along with being a great game, it also has to get over the hurdle of nostalgia to break through and become a true favourite of mine. And of the games that have done so recently, they were generally released before the 2010 date, too (MGS/MGS2, SH1/SH2, Persona 3/Persona 4, King's Field, Ninja Gaiden, etc.). So, it seems like it's become more of a nostalgia for the time period overall, which is kind of strange considering that for a lot of the games I play I was either not born or was too young to play/remember it at all during release.

So guys, do you have the same experiences? Or is this not something that's generally happened to you?

It is huge. I would love modern RPGs to have turns and traditional zero-to-hero structures.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I have nostalgia for certain games but I do not crave any sort of "nostalgia factor" in new games. I feel as though the use of nostalgia in new games cripples their ability to become something better.

However, sometimes I do yearn for things to go back to how they were. But that's more because of a developer's stupid decision than nostalgia... I think.

I'll drop nostalgia in a heartbeat, to be honest.

Final Fantasy was once my favorite gaming franchise but I couldn't be less interested in FF15. I used to all about JRPGs but I really don't care for most of what is produced now. I once looked down on FPS games but now some of them are among my favorite current series.

I really don't have a problem leaving games behind if they're no longer what I'm looking for.

There are also very, very few old games (PS2 and earlier) that I have any interest in playing again. Most of the time that I've gone back, I've been frustrated with the lack of some of the newer features and improvements.

Final Fantasy fans live onto the nostalgia of the great Final Fantasy games during the 1990s. They keep holding onto the hope that the next FF game will be as good as the old games. FF13, FF14 and FF15 have all been a huge let down for FF fans. Will we ever see a great FF game on par with FF 6 to 10 again?

Only series that I feel nostalgic about are Crash Bandicoot and Super Smash Bros.

Melee is the game that made me a Nintendo fan in the first place, and if it weren't for the fact that the original Crash trilogy were some of the first games I've ever played, I wouldn't have even considered buying N. Sane Trilogy.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I believe so. Each final fantasy being different, i'm sure they'll find one to please most of the people. With great story, Characters, gameplay, soundtrack, and so forth

I used to buy everything Nintendo did and made because I grew up with it until the Wii but still when I play their games co-op with friends, like mario kart of mario party, huge nostalgia shows up.

Same goes for co-op in games like Halo of Gears of War with my best friend.

Apart from that I used to have big nostalgia for some series, like final fantasy and stuff but that has been pretty destroyed by the latest few installments.

I do still play old consoles and when I grab the PS2 or Dreamcast from the basement huge huge nostalgia pops up when games like Powerstone, Shenmue, Sklies of Arcadia, Grandia or on PS2, Kessen, Metal Gear or Zone of the Enders gets played, thats just an awesome feeling.

Video games aren't very nostalgia friendly in my opinion because the experience itself evolves over time and a new bar is set as you play new games. Gaming becomes more immersive and closer to the ideal as technology gets better. Playing an old game just isn't the same as when you first played it and the other games that are available are like it. I prefer to play games that give me as an immersive experience as I can get versus playing as familiar characters in games that focus on nostalgia. I guess that's the main reason why I despise Nintendo's games.

Nostalgia play a big factor for me, just look at my top 50 games of all time
