Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's online isn't superior to the Wii U version's.

Do you usually have lag/slow connection? If ya do that's probably why not the game itself (part of it could be as well)

I don't and while I can't speak for those putting up online gameplay videos, it's safe to assume not all of them have shaky connections.

The only issue I've experienced is other players not always breaking the item boxes. Not a huge issue to me actually...

In MK8 or MK8D? If the former, you'll experience it in MK8D aswell. If the latter, it was the same in MK8. Eitherway, there's been no significant improvement made to MK8D's online, they both perform pretty much exactly the same.

I hate to admit it - but my experience in fact has been worse. It feels like I get dropped in spectator mode more often waiting for a match. Connections drop in the lobby all the time. The really irritating thing is when the connection drops just as the match is about to start.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Talking about MK8D. Overall, it's been pretty good.

My experience has been good (just good) with respect to MK8D's online. There have been a couple races where I edged out the person for first place, only to find out I lost.

To the OP, this is NOT the same online that we will be paying for at all. Once the paid service comes up, there will be online lobbies, there will be an app for creating parties and chatting with friends (which in itself is new, so how could they possibly use the same infrastructure?) plus monthly game downloads, etc. The online connection is what I'm assuming that you are more referring to, which I have not experienced any issue with yet and I have played with people from the opposite side of the world. I haven't noticed any lag, latency, issues with items appearing/disappearing, or any of the things you have described.

Of course, every user's online experience will be different based upon where they live and what internet is available to them as well as those they are connected with, but I honestly have not seen any hiccups. Anyways, to go along with that, this is a pretty new service for Nintendo and as time goes by I am sure that they will have updates and patches to smooth over any issues there are. I have faith that they have turned over a new leaf with the aggressive way that they have approached their products and their marketing over the past year or so. Online will only get better, it's not just going to stay the same straight through.

I played online for hours this weekend. It's fine.

I'm about to test it out. Wish me luck!

From what I experienced, it's far worse than on Wii U. It takes longer to the see the voted map. Sometimes up to 15 seconds of nothing happening. There are issues with getting items... Meaning, you have to wait longer and you only get mushrooms and coins for the whole course. And disconnects of course, where  you suddenly get kicked out or you find yourself only with 2 other people left in the lobby.

If many people opt in on paying Nintendo's online fees, I suppose Nintendo will make more games online capable in general, and start taking online functionality seriously, releasing more patches.

But we shall see. I don't think they stand to gain anything from just charging people extra without putting effort into it. That would soon cast them out of favor.

Yeah, it's broken.

Started off well enough. I actually came in first, twice! Then, after about five races, I had a "comminution error". Tried joining three more games and haven't been able to.

Not good, Nintendo. For a game that many people may have purchased the console for, it's going up leave a bad taste in some mouths.
