If many people opt in on paying Nintendo's online fees, I suppose Nintendo will make more games online capable in general, and start taking online functionality seriously, releasing more patches.
But we shall see. I don't think they stand to gain anything from just charging people extra without putting effort into it. That would soon cast them out of favor.
