Sure, but would you say the PS1 is way more iconic for gamers in Germany than the NES?

Absolutely, the NES was overshadowed by the home computers.

I'm not even sure if it launched in Germany before 1990 (so 7 years after the launch in Japan, 5 years after the US launch and 4 years after the launch in some other European countries).

If the dates of this site are correct, the NES launched in Germany in 1990 together with the GameBoy and sold 145k units in the first 6 months: http://www.nintendofans.de/feature_special_nhistory.php

If that is true, it was very old tech at that point. And importing a console or games even from other European countries was a big hassle in the '80s.

Well I cant argue with that since I dont live in Germany. Here in Norway the NES was big though. I had it and several people I knew had it as well. We used to borrow games from each other. I was also a member of Nintendo Magasinet. Which I guess was the Scandinavian version of Nintendo Power.

Fun fact: My parents bought me my NES in Germany. We were on vacation in Denmark and drove to Germany and thats when they got it for me. I remember seeing Super Mario Bros. 2 among the games in this big glass cabinet there. Still have my copy of the Super Mario Bros that came with the console. Still have the first game I ever owned

Nintendo is a household name, but Nintendos sales were never par to Sony until they hit the Wii and lightening still has not struck twice. Sony expanded the gaming market to what it is today and with Microsofts entrance mostly split with Sony having the dominating share. IF you look at the 360 and Ps3 sales combined as well it should hit close to the dominant sales of the PS2. Sony is the legit worlds largest gaming brand. The brand is now synonymous with gaming no different than Nintendo as it is their bread and butter.

And even with the Wii's success, the much more expensive PS3 outsold it in EU.  Only by about 1M, but it still did it.

How is it not true? The NES was pretty much a non-factor in Europe while the PS1 was the first ever console to be a huge success there. Even now Europe is often referred to as "Sony land" here, and the PS1 was instrumental in that.

It wasnt a non-factor. Sure the PS1 might have sold more, but that doesnt really mean much. I mean the DS sold a shitload in europe as well, but its not really more iconic than the PS1.

You do realize the NES sold less than 8M units in Europe, right? Probably much less, since Nintendo just lumped it in with Others.  While the PS1 sold 37M? So yes, the NES wasn't very popular there. There's a reason the EU version of the NES Classic was being sold on the US Amazon site.

I dont really know what you mean by that. It was sold in stores and other websites as well...

The PS1 might have sold more, but you barely hear about it. I collect older games and the NES is way more popular from what Ive seen. Also go to any game store and youll find several pieces of merchandise that reference the NES. Not much the PS1. Except a carrying bag I saw once...

Well first of all we are talking about Europe...

Second of all we are talking about iconic consoles. What makes the PS1 so iconic? It sold better is not really a good answer. The DS sold more than the PS1 and Gameboy in Europe, but its not really more iconic than the PS1 or the Gameboy here.

Tekken 3

FF 7,8,9

Policenauts

King's Field

Resident Evil

Megaman DASH

Final Fantasy Tactics

Street Fighter Alpha

What I get from this article is that the NES struggled in all Europe as long as Mattel and local distributors were responsible for marketing + distribution.

The situation got better in 1990 when "Nintendo of Europe" was found in Germany (Großostheim) just in time for the launch of the Gameboy and they also took over marketing + distribution of the NES in mid-European countries.

"Mattel still held on to Italy until 1991, meaning that the NES had almost zero penetration in that country." - In hindsight not the best decision of Nintendo to not take control of the NES distribution sooner in Europe.

The NES was available in some parts of Europe almost at the same time it was available in the US. It first debuted in 1986, with local distributors releasing it in Scandinavia and Germany.

Well I guess its only in Scandinavia where its considered a very iconic console then. Hmmm...I always thought it was more loved outside of here.

Honestly there isn't a fraction of the nostalgia around the PS1 as there is around the NES, the SNES, or hell even the N64, even though the playstation outsold each of them by a wide margin. That plus sony mostly relies on third party games so price would be higher as almost all the games on it would be third party so sony would have to pay them to use their games. Plus let's be honest, ps1 games haven't exactly aged well, it had crap 3d graphics even compared to n64, it'd be kind of terrible to play plenty of those games these days with original ps1 graphics.

Also a good amount of what made really popular was it had the best sports games. Sports fans flocked to it. None of those games are classics and there would be no desire to play them again. It'd make a great RPG & metal gear solid box, but other than that it wouldn't be that great.

So no, I don't think Sony would ever release a ps1 classic because it just wouldn't sell very well. They can do those games a lot more justice and make more money by remaking a few of those games to sell on the ps4 rather than trying to compete with nintendo on nostaglia and retro games which is just an absolute losing battle.
