This video explains the difference between the old crusty rumble tech and the awesome new HD Rumble tech in the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons.

You learned something today.

Interesting video. The more you know

Dualshock 4 can vibrate in a way that can fool you there is something rattling around in the controller like demoed on the Playroom. I'm not sure what HD rumble does that much better. It seems it's good for battery life though.

Very good for battery life with the drawback being they only work at one frequency. I think Nintendo has built an array of linear resonance actuators inside each Joy-Con as to cover a wide range of frequencies.

Isn't that what you get already in many phones. I didn't think they gave a very strong rumble effect. They look very cheap to say the least and efficient but they really don't look very powerful. I've not used a joy-con though. They certainly look like something that would be much cheaper than rumble motors not more expensive. Xbox one controller has 2 large main rumble motors plus 2 trigger rumble motors. The effect can be brilliant. It's hard to imagine these joy-cons could get close to that. It will be funny if Nintendo have outdone Microsoft with such a low cost efficient alternative.

hd rumble makes you feel the sensation of different stuff through rumble tech, like the ice cubes falling or the water. You can develop a game or a mechanic that makes you feel like someone is scratching the controller from the inside, that you need to pull a rope or that your controller is full of "balls" like 1-2 switch or full of moving ants. You feel the sensation of that stuff instead of the vibration.

Now sell me a controller that doesn't have that, or Amiibo scanning in it.

I assume since people keep saying "the features make it cost $70" that without those two features I'd get it for around $20.

I saw the use in an hour long 1-2 switch video on GTlive. It is cute - but I will turn it off almost immediately.

You assume you can shut it off............

I can't wait to try this out and see what it's like. Always good to read/watch resources like this though, as an engineer, I find it pretty fascinating!

A lot of indie games announced today support HD Rumble. Those games will be a lot cheaper then 1-2 Switch.
