PS4 update 4.50 adds PS4 Pro boost mode, improves gameplay without patch

Got a PS4 Pro? Then you'll be able to enjoy improved gameplay for titles without a Pro patch thanks to PS4 update 4.50!

Sony detailed a number of new features available with the PlayStation 4 system software update 4.50 earlier today, though there’s one particular addition that may have got lost amidst all the chatter of external storage support and custom wallpapers.

According to Japanese gamers (via NeoGAF) who got access to closed beta for PS4 update 4.50, the firmware will introduce something known as Boost Mode, which allows PlayStation 4 Pro owners to enjoy improved frame rate among other additions for games that have NOT yet received a PS4 Pro patch.

The translation for the feature reads as follows: “Boost mode. When playing games released before the release of PS4 Pro (CHU-7000 series), you may be able to enjoy high quality game play by improving frame rate etc etc. Please turn it off when unexpected action occurs during game play.”

PS4 system software 4.50 is currently in its beta phase, so those of you who were lucky enough to get picked for the testing period will be able to enjoy all of the new features from today.

This is good news sounds simulair to what xbox one does to xbox360 games and what I hope scorpio will do too, ps4 pro was quite badly supported when it launched seems like its going to form into a much more robust platform this year.

Sony must do it since recently they said the ps4 pro is outselling the slim model (makes sense to me) so people will demand better support lol.

as a day1 Pro buyer... this is the best news of the year so far :D

Edit: BLOODBORNE HERE I GO... AGAIN!!!

ofcourse this won't make 30fps games 60fps, but it could result in stable 30/60fps in games that do drop frames or much better framerate in games with unlocked framerates

Great, Great, Great news!

Quick someone make a thread about it so I can say Great some more.

Go ahead!

Wow such great news, it really is great that more great games will make use of the great power of the Pro.

i think it is just to improve a more solid 30/60fps since those games already developed to hit those fps, so don't expect it to see performance from 30fps to become higher

The timing ... Sony you just know when to make the right moves.

The PS5 Exists.

That's great if true, but Sony just outlined the new update on the blog and didn't mention it...so I wouldn't take this as confirmed just yet.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

yea, a game running at 34-38fps would also look more choppy than a stable 30fps game on a normal TV - in the future that might change with variable refresh rates for TVs (HDMI2.1) and new consoles

It's a bit too vague to get excited about it.
