Forums - Nintendo Discussion - An estimation of the Breath of the Wild map size.

So looks like some folks on reddit have been hard at work trying to figure out how large the BOTW map is even before the game comes out. Since the gameplay reveal back at E3 2016 there have been a lot of crazy guesses about how big the world it, some saying it was around 2.5 X the size of The Witcher 3. Luckily, looks like someone actually sat down and tried to get an acurate measurement.

Now, obviously simply knowing how big a world is has nothing to do with the quality of the game, or how much there is to do, but I thought this was interesting and wanted to share.

Here's  a picture comparing it to a few other Zelda games, and Skyrim (note that WW is way too small, and they're working to fix it).

And here's a link to the actual calculations used to make the measurements themselves.

Personally, that's a pretty good map size. Plenty of room to have lots to do but not so big that it'll take forever to get from place to place.

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Size is nice but I don't mind small maps either as long as it has interesting things in it.

Wind Waker's overworld was largely empty but there was plenty to do in the main quest.

If accurate, that's really nice and big. Surprised at how tiny OOT is. I suppose the 20 years since I played it have skewed my memories of it a little.

Going by the numbers in the picture it looks like it's 61.2 sq km vs. 36.72 sq km for Skyrim. So not quite twice the size, but pretty close. Skyrim is pretty much exactley 60% of the size of BOTW.

100 + shrines to explore and probably 4 main dungeons.

And we saw some glimps of few towns during the last 2 trailers so I don't think it will be lacking stuff.

Oh they said that? That sounds great then.

Yea, that was said. And from what we know of the "shrines" at least. They cover o% of that map. They are basically all underground in a sense. I mean you go to a small little hut basically and get teleported to some giant labrynth puzzle.

It's cool to have that amount of space, as long as there is more than a handful of skulltulas and heart containers to find in it. I'll take full small map over giant barren land any day of the week.

My estimate was based off of holding up a post it note to teh screen and comparing. The image is too small on my monitor to really read anything.

But looking at the sizes solely with eyes, it don't look muc bigerr, but using a post it note you can tell that if you rotate skyrim like 90 degrees that two of them basically fit then into the square of Breath.

Oh well I think games are getting to big nowadays though. Like I new the GTA3 and Vice city map off by heart. Always new where i was. Don't think I've memorised a map since back in the PS2 days.

I hope its not too big, should bé smaller than TW3, thé games with à huge map without à lot of empty Boring area, even the witcher 3 thé most filled open world had some
