If Nintendo really makes the best games in the industry, wouldn't you expect their consoles to sell more than 30-40 million unless a gimmick catches fire and attracts non-gamers?

Nintendo never, not even in its worst years, sold 30M units.

You need to recount. Use the table I put in OP.

I'm talking about home consoles, there's no need to bring handhelds when they have nothing to do with what we are talking about.

It's cute that you count Nes and Snes as wins over Sony lol.

Edit : Also Home console + handheld vs 1 home console isn't really fair either.

it does make sense to bring up handhelds because Switch is both a handheld & a home console. Why would it make sense to compare it only to one or the other when its both?

Referring to their whole portfolio in comparison to other offers which makes it niche.

Playstation: 105 million
N64: 33 million

Playstation 2: 158 million
Gamecube: 22 million

Playstation 3: 87 million
Wii: 101 million

Playstation 4: 50 million
Wii U: 14 million

Just an example of sales history since Sony and Nintendo have been in direct competition. Overall the market has undoubtedly spoken to its desire for more than just Nintendo games being offered to a system. Sure things like a 3D Mario, Smash, and Mario Kart push a lot of units, but a lot of franchises are over-hyped due to nostalgia and name recognition. Zelda is one such example. The best sellin Zelda is Twilight Princess that sold 8.6 million copies being on two systems the gamecube and Wii in its lifetime 11 years ago. Uncharted 4 sold 8.8 million in 7 months. Uncharted 3 came out around the same time as Skyward sword. Skyward sword on a console with 100m install base sold 3.67 million all-time. Uncharted 3 sold more than that on DAY 1. In a single day on a console that had just over half that install base and its sold 6.8 million all-time. Most Zelda games have only sold 3-4 million copies. Which is respectable, but thats nothing compared to many franchises. Call of Duty does in one day or in one weekend what the cast majority of Nintendo titles do in their lifetime. Thats the part Nintendo as a company and its fans fall to grasp. Most people don't care about most of their franchises more than a lot of franchises that are new today.

Is this a fair comparison? Do you really believe you can compare that way? The market has shown overwhelming support for Nintendo even during its worst years. But if we compare it your way, it doesn't show the true reality of things, but your reality: the reality where all that matters are home console sales. Yet that doesn't reflect the market and its position towards Nintendo.

Here is the updated report (note that it starts before the existence of playstation, in contrast with your table) based on vgchartz numbers:

@BraLoD: The market highly disagrees with you.

Care to tell me what criteria you used to justify that gameboy sales (which came out in 1989) should be lumped in with a home console that came out in 1994, and not with the home console that came out in 1990, or the home console that came out in 1984? Ohh right, because the concept of "generations" is completely arbitrary, and you're just maniplating it to make Nintendo look better than it's actually doing.

Nintendo games are so valuable and the best the insdustry has to offer, that they even have their own genre. How many time have we heard "I don't like Nintendo games"?

Only the best: Nintendo.

This is why the Wii U was such a huge succes.

You are right. Wii U was a failure. That does not change the fact that Nintendo games are the best. Or are we going to forget the Nes, Snes, DS, Wii and 3DS?

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

You have no idea how much I'm giggling at the idea of Nintendo announcing a 3DS replacement next year that is incompatible with switch games just to watch your brain shatter. You know deep down Nintendo is more than capable of such a move.

The portability and social factors are where the value is at now - but only if that matters to you.

Some people stay home and don't have many friends and family to play games with. The Switch isn't for them.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Also why would I a core gamer, get a switch when most games coming out are either on ps4 or exclusive to ps4? The only things that aren't on ps4 are the games that came out on the Wii u, that are getting rereleased on sewueled on the switch..... Nintendo gamers are probably getting the switch....

What the hell does being a core gamer mean?

Do people who play all the games combined on the DS and Wii or 3DS and WiiU not consist of core gamers?

So many games on the 3DS were core experiences that require a committed game time. You can't pretend like core gamers don't game on Nintendo consoles!!!

Stop doing that.

You are right, one could argue real core gamers who care about a games actual story and essence and what it brings to you as a person are mostly Nintendo and PlayStation guys....

It's just I used to be a Nintendo guy, heck I have a new 3DS xl which I love, but I can't look at Nintendo like I did in the 64 days or GC days because they aren't the same guys imo.... Or maybe they are and I just got spoiled by the plate of food on the PlayStation side of things. Nintendo does make some of the top games in the industry, but they aren't enough to capture the eyes of the general gaming audience, who buys Wii sports and GTA V ..... We'll see what happens.....

For me, what really matters are the games. And people buy Nintendo consoles for their games - and also for some 3rd party support, specially in the handheld cathegory.

People seems to forget, from time to time, that some very succesfull franchises today are in Nintendo consoles: Monster Hunter, Pokemon, Mario games, Yokai Watch, Animal Crossing, Shin Megami Tensei (in Japan, of course), Dragon Quest etc etc etc There´s enough great franchises to guarantee them some decent sales.

People keep grumbling about specs and memory and battery and whatever but we´ve seen all those issues in many different devices recently and even in some consoles. Every console has its issues. I have a PS4 and I waited a long time to buy it because the initial $399 price tag was too much to me. It has "excellent" 500 Gb of memory but it doesn´t mean much because games require installation. I have only 07 games and they already consumed 40% of the memory! Also, the battery life of its controllers just suck hard. They barely last 04 hours even with all the energy saving options on. Setting multiplayer games is also cluncky with the need of creating multiple profiles. Why can´t I just press the damn start button for a second player?

No console is perfect. In the end, what really matters are the games. Nintendo can be successfull if the Switch has a good flow of launches of its exclusive franchises, like the 3ds had, and a few adjustments on the peripherals prices. After all, what people really want are good games, not just high-tech expensive devices. A device like that can´t doanything if it has no great games

its not going to happen man, you dont merge the handheld & console divisions for software and hardware, tell investors that developing for two seperate platforms has been a struggle and that going forward will create a single unified platform followed by releasing a device that acts as a handheld and console.

The most likely scenario is that Nintendo releases other pieces of hardware in the Switch family.
