GTA 5 Outsold Uncharted 4 in UK Last Year; PS4 Performed Better Than Xbox One - Report

GTA V continues to amaze.

Grand Theft Auto V continues to perform amazingly well in the UK. According to data from trade body UKIE and sales monitor Chart-Track (via GamesIndustry.biz), Rockstar's open-world behemoth was the fifth best-selling physical game in the UK, in its third year on the market.

That's above 2016 releases such as Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (No. 6), Watch Dogs 2 (No. 8), and Overwatch (No. 9).

FIFA 17 beat Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (No. 2) to the top of the chart. Those two giants were followed by Battlefield 1 (No. 3), The Division (No. 4), and, as previously mentioned, GTA V (No. 5), which has now sold over six million copies in the UK alone. It should be noted that the data in the report do not include digital sales.

Elsewhere in the report, it was revealed that the PS4 was above Xbox One in terms of software sales. Around 45 percent of all boxed games sold in the UK last year were for Sony's platform, while Microsoft's console grabbed 34.1 percent. Nintendo will be pleased that the 3DS increased its market share year-on-year to 7 percent, though the Wii U was below even the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Overall, game sales were down 16.4 percent compared to 2015, to around £776 million. That follows the news in late 2016 that big games like Call of Duty: Infinite WarfareWatch Dogs 2, and Dishonored 2 all sold considerably less than their predecessors.

Hardware sales were down 27 percent, despite the release of the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S. The only portion of the market that grew was the accessories sector, up 1 percent thanks to the release of PSVR.

Take a look at the full top 10 games list below.

Kicking a ball still beats shooting people! Although the situation would probably be different if there were a dozen footy games around as well.

Hardware down, software down :/

Although

Digital game sales in the UK grew to £2.18 billion in 2016 and generated almost three times as much in sales as physical games, according to the Entertainment Retailers Association. This is an increase of 12.1% over 2015's £1.95 billion sales. Physical sales meanwhile dropped from £927 million to £776 million, a decrease of 16.4% year-on-year. Digital sales therefore take up a 74% share of the market. The ERA did not break out mobile sales within these figures.

So boxed dropped 151m, digital rose 230m (probably a lot of that is mobile)

Still no real clues how psvr is selling

One of the key reasons for this growth was VR, with PlayStation VR in particular proving a strong seller in the category. If PlayStation VR had not been released, the accessories market would have declined in 2016. GfK supplied us with the below Top 20 UK Accessories of 2016. Note, the firm has stripped out PlayStation VR, toys-to-life and digital content from the chart.

Bah, why so secretive.

Uncharted 4 outsold Overwatch? Damn didn't see that coming.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

Uncharted 4 was the best selling exclusive last year and that is really amazing.
To lose against GTA V is nothing to be ashamed of because GTA V is a freaking beast.

Wow. Forza 3 is higher than gears. Gears really underperformed

That list sums up the majority of UK gaming sadly. I am completely shocked that Watchdogs 2 makes the list though. Lots of people must have bought it, but never talked about it, in gaming circles.

Proud of Forza Horizon 3 performance the past year.

Honestly, GTA5 not being a launch title for Switch would be a missed opportunity. Game is still on fire as far as sales go.

Theres like 65-70m sales of GTA5.

Most people that want to play it, already have.

Id rather the switch gets something "new".

Uncharted 4 and GTA 5 did amazing.

Ps4 wins 2016 in the UK. The gap is getting bigger. Congrats!
