It's called an opinion. Get over it! Why are you getting so offended? |
I don't particularly have a dog in this fight, but I do feel the need to draw a distinction here between an opinion and a belief. An opinion is a view on a subject that is entirely subjective and to which no definitive right or wrong answer exists, such as whether hamburgers are better than chicken sandwiches, what the best game of all time is, what the coolest car is, etc. A belief, meanwhile, is a view on a subject that does have a definitive right or wrong answer, even if that answer will never be known by humanity, such as who will win the next presidential election, whether Half Life 3 will ever release, whether aliens exist, etc.
The distinction is important because while you're welcome to hold whatever opinions you want and, ideally, no one should get offended, beliefs are another matter. If you accuse someone of secretly masterminding the Cuban missile crisis (or in this case, accusing them of lying about actually liking a certain game), then it's a direct attack on someone's character, and that can reasonably have offense taken at it.

If the compliments were nicer or more elaborate, would they then be more convincing?
Wherein the link you provided does it say that Phil Spencer "hates 3rd party exclusive deals and" and that "he will do away with them"?
Phil Spencer had more to say than just VR being "not a thing". Read at your own leisure: http://www.gamesradar.com/phil-spencer-xbox-vr/
What part of the quote above did you find particularly objectionable?
Indeed you are entitled. |
Ok paragraph 1, you're arguing over semantics. He says he's 'not a huge fan' and something they'll 'do less of'. Have you seen any sign of that? Do you really believe he would of said that if Xbox were in the driving seat? I highly doubt it.
Paragraph 2, your link is great. It shows exactly how he works. He's saying PSVR is great while at the same time playing it down. He does this a lot, he's full of backhanded complements.
Paragraph 3, I'm not sure why you can't see it, is it too subtle? Actually I think it's one of his less subtle jabs. again he's taking a shot at Sony, he refers to them as 'other platforms' but he is taking a shot at them Instead of doing what he claims he likes to do and talk about what they are doing, he's trying to highlight what Sony isn't doing. So he doesn't like consoles but thinks it's ok to downplay the competition while saying how good your games are.
In conclusion, MS and Spencer constantly refer to Sony, either directly or indirectly. Spencer always downplays Sony. He's can be subtle but everything is well thought out. PS4 Pro in the works 'not a fan of 1.5 consoles '. PSVR in the works 'VR isn't ready'.
On the other side you hardly hear Sony mention Xbox or refer to it. I think the 'how to borrow a game' was the only pop at MS. Could be wrong but that's the only one I can remember.

Well this is subjective, it's how you interpret what he says. My opinion is that Spencer talks a lot of shit and has sly digs at Sony. Others think he's more genuine which is fine. But we certainly do 'believe' in our own opinions, otherwise we wouldn't have them.

No, it makes it sound like he hadn't played the game yet, because it wasn't out. Spencer is fine. |
You could be right. You do talk a lot of sense on VGC. I just don't trust him.

But it's still an issue where there is one definitive correct answer, even if we'll never know it. Either Spencer is talking a lot of shit/taking digs at Sony, or he's sincere. If you claim that Spencer is lying about a particulary subject, and somebody else claims that he's not, one of you is assuredly wrong. That's what separates this as a belief from an opinion.
(Also from a purely grammar nazi standpoint, you "hold" opinions instead of believing in them)

I stand corrected! Very insightful, thank you!
