Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch Prediction: Switch will have Pro version that includes dock with extra processing power

is it possible with technology, yes. SLI bridge plus GPU in base.

Gonna need a CPU in the base as well

If the Tegra 2 rumours are true then this setup (3.0TF) would be:

230% XB1 (1.3TF)

166% PS4 (1.8TF)

75% PSPro (4TF)

50% Scorpio (6TF)

NS + NSlite + NSi + NSXL = 'Next-gen' console

If Nintendo stays at 1080p while the 4K Twins go higher res then Nintendo won't need most of the extra horsepower.

Two NS alone would be halfway between XB1 and PS4.

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

I don't think so. It might be technically doable, but I doubt it's a magical solution to the supposed lack of power. It'll also probably be quite expensive. I also don't think Nintendo wants to segment the userbase like that right away. Besides, they've already stated the dock won't contain any extra processing power (I don't remember the exact words, but that's the impression I got). I think that's pretty conclusive and doesn't leave much room for adding extra processing power to the dock.

The dock in the basic would just be a dock that connects to the TV.  Im talking about a different dock for the pro Switch.  Normal dock is for entry level, a pro dock would be a SPD for those willing to pay for it.  But yeah, the dock you see at the trailer is not a supplimental computing device.  I'm just saying that maybe when they truly announce the Switch, that could be a surprise.

Why not have a pro version that is just stronger altogether?

But I'm going to wait for the normal console first before I make any new variant predictions :p

Wasn't there like a rumor or a patent that the NX was going to have something that can make your system more powerful without actually buying the entire product again?????

I'll try to find it if I can.

It could happen, but I don't think it'll happen for a while. Nintendo will want to make hay with the whole "Switch" console and portable all-in-one. The moment you tell people they have to buy a "seperate console dock" is the moment the concept loses a lot of its steam.

That's not what they said, though. What they said is this:

"The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch."

Which is true and obvious, and this:

"The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."

Nothing about power, what the dock won't do, or what the dock will only do. Just the main function, which leaves room for secondary functions, like providing extra power when docked.

I'd  love to believe it man, I really would, I just don't see it happening in the short term.

There needs to be a home console. If they put all their eggs on a tablet then things will be dicey. It really shouldn't be so hard to have a home console in the 2.5-3 TF area and plays all Switch games upscaled or with locked FPS.

A console developer on Anatech forums said there's no extra "real" hardware in the dock, just "upscaling" hardware.

It's possible but unlikely. Firstly a Switch Pro will appeal to no one the Switch lite doesn't already appeal to, so I definitely won't expect it at launch. And just to reaffirm the existence of a Pro would have no bearings on software support for those hoping the Switch recieves same support as Xbox and Playstation. The common denominator will always be the fact games have to be ported down to be able to run on a Wii U (more or less) level portable. Game will be required to work without the dock.

What is interesting however is the fact that Nintendo's requirements to hit native 4k are significantly lower than PS4/XB1. They could probably afford it with a $99 Gpu. I would happily buy a $150 SCD dock which rendered NS games Native 4k. If it was possible I'd like to see it.
