You sound more and more like the people who called me a fool because I said that the Wii U will be a failure. Let's suppose that what you said is really what Nintendo is going to do, that's pretty awful. The 2DS came to life because Nintendo was proven horribly wrong about 3D being the future. What you are describing is very much in the same vein, first Nintendo puts out a device that will turn off a lot of people and only once it's clear that it doesn't work as well as intended will they come around with a correction of their flawed product. They'd be better off by launching two separate devices to begin with instead of a hybrid. |
The hybrid certainly won't please everyone, we don't need to wait to know that. I think everyone would agree on this. Some people don't care for its portable function, some don't care for it as a home console. Key word being "some". The ideal situation would be a triad of options because there exist people like me who are more likely to buy a hybrid (especially if its a tablet) then a standalone handheld/console. For many people the hyprid will hopefully add worth to the system and kill 2 birds with 1 stone alongside bringing some other novelties (handheld local multiplayer, tablet functionality etc). If the dedicated handheld market was on fire and the 3DS was selling like the DS, I would be with you but I think Nintendo is on the right track.
The hybrid tablet as a "gimmick" should bring more attention and conversation to the Nintendo brand then a standalone handheld/console combo would have a chance at. Stand alone systems will/can come later on. Of course if the majority of people are irked by jack of all trades master of none design, then you're right, this is yet to be seen though. I'm personally glad Nintendo took the more risky route then just putting out 2 vanilla systems.
