Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch to not have dual screen play

Pretty old news but GameXplain has a video on it and I haven't seen a thread on it yet so new thread it is!

What are your guys thoughts on this transition from Dual screen gameplay from DS, 3DS, and Wii U back to a single screen experience?

Personally, I really enjoyed dual screens in DS and 3DS and will miss it in Pokemon for battle menus or even as a simple map screen for adventure games. Dual screen wasn't too impressive for the Wii U except for Mario Maker which is important to note considering how useful dual screen was for that game. Nintendo will most likely make have a Switch sequel/port of Mario Maker too so it'll be interesting how that would work.

Pretty sure we all guessed as much when Breath of the Wild was shown to not use the Wii U touchscreen despite how well previous games used

Its going to feel weird..... but change is what Nintendo needs imo!

Pocky Lover Boy!

this is a great change. THe dual screens rarely worked well on the 3DS imo, just distracting constantly looking back and forth. Might come as a shocker but a lot of us gamers enjoy having a start screen to navigate to occasionally rather than splitting up the screens and ending up with a smaller gaming screen

It doesn't really work so I won't miss it. I want to sit down and enjoy a game, not be frantically looking back and forth between displays, it breaks immersion and comfort in a game IMO.

Dual screen was fuckin expressive and helpful for Xenoblade X, Mario Maker, Splatoon, Fatal Frame V, Star Fox Zero, Wonderful 101, Shin Megami Tensei #FE, Paper Mario Color Splash. It would helpful for Zelda BotW too, but Nintendo dropped the second screen to outshine Wii U version and show Switch in a good light.

Wii U dual screen play sucked anyways. It breaks the immersion.

I consider this a so what data point. DS/3DS and WiiU largely barely used dual-screen but for maps or menus. Far smaller % of games made good use of the 2nd screen. Hell, even Nintendo didn't do it all that well when it explicitly tried to with games like Nintendoland.

It also frees up the computing hardware to only focus on a single display, which is very good.

I'll miss dual screens. It works really well with Mario Maker, Nintendo Land, and Splatoon as examples. Contrary to some, it created a unique experience for me as a gamer. Splatoon having it's own map on the game pad to keep track of ink and to squid jump by touching the location of your teammates, then creating levels in Mario Maker is so simple and intuitive with the gamepad. I also liked it with games like Time Hallow, Fire Emblem, Pokémon, Yokai Watch, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, Rhythm Heaven, etc. I've played games for a long time and there are some games I can't imagine without dual screen in all honesty.

I'll miss the dual screens, but it's not like I'm going to stop playing NDS and 3DS games any time soon :p
