Forums - Gaming Discussion - So Nintendo officially quit console gaming. Switch is a handheld system

It's essentially a handheld, quoting Nintendo:

"The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from"

"The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch"

The only use of the dock is TV-out and function as a charging cradle, the dock is basically

This

and this in one

with detachable buttons

The dock is NOT part of the system, it will not provide extra compute power, a shame. How do you feel about this?

Meh. I always liked their handhelds offerings more than the home console. The Switch just means they will put all their eggs in one basket now, bringing twice the efford to the platform that before.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I can play it on a TV with a regular controller. Its a console. It just happens to double as a handheld.

Not exactly, it can be used like real home console, so it's both handheld and home console.

If performance is same both docked and in handheld mode I consider it more of a handheld.

If SoC runs downclocked/partly disabled in handheld mode and fully clocked/enabled in docked mode I'm leaning more toward home console with handheld mode.

Nintendo marketing department strikes again! It's a home console, but handheld. It's powerful, but not. It's got Skyrim, but we are not so sure. Puppy-head is cute! Definitely cute.

Good! It means that it will have Pokemon, Yokai watch, Monster Hunter that Japan will indulge in!

And if it is a handheld, then we shouldn't be comparing it to the PS4 and XONE Directly.

Pocky Lover Boy!

If it plays on a TV then.. it must be just a handheld :p

Nintendo is pulling a bait and switch on a massive level. It is a 720p tablet. Nothing more. A Nintendo branded tablet. What a gimmick.

Handheld is a console, thus they have not left the console market.

With that said, it's a home console. Doubles as a handheld. or vice versa. All about your own perspective.
