It's not a matter of getting away with it.  Such an order suicides his own country even if a counter-strike is never launched.  He knows this--if he didn't, he would have used them on somebody already.  He's crazy, but predictably self-serving.

If you believe a new war with Russia is conceivable then I'd be more worried about what happens when she wins than if Trump wins.

The problem is that Clinton being the more hawkish of the two doesn't necessarily mean that she is more likely to start a war with Russia in my mind.  I think Clinton will be very aware of what she is doing in regard to foreign policy and the likely results of her actions.  That's not to say she will never make mistakes, but she has a lot of experience dealing with Russia.  I believe she can take a hard line stance on issues without getting into armed conflict.  I do not trust Trump to not aggravate a tense situation and potentially get into an avoidable armed conflict.  He seems to treat things in a binary way, from what I've heard, where you are either a friend or an enemy with precious little room in between; and when you are an enemy he responds with lots of threats and bluster.  In other words, he is not a good diplomat.

I think NBC has most likely found out about something that is being contemplated.  That doesn't necessarily mean it is being contemplated very seriously.  For instance, our military has multiple times drawn up plans for invading Canada even though there has been no chance that it will happen since the early 1800s.  I understand that was done as kind of a thought exercise with places they are more familiar with to help their ability to plan out stuff in places they are less familiar with. 

The article itself says that no decision has been made to carry out such an attack, but on the other hand it does seem like it is being considered as a more serious possiblity than invading Canada.  As a Russian, how would you feel if the parts of the Internet that your government is censoring (blocking Russians from accessing) were no longer censored due to U.S. action?
