My favourites (not necessarily best):

Half-Life 1
Far Cry 1
Battlefield 1942 (with Forgotten Hope mod)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Vietcong
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
No One Lives Forever
Dark Forces II

Excluded FPS-RPGs from the list.

I'm not seeing Vietcong on Steam or GOG :(

Looks like there's a PS2/Xbox version. Is that worth playing?

Halo
Titanfall
Doom

I hardly play any other fps but those three are amazing :).

Quake

It really does not matter which version.

Level design
Weapons
Movement
Skill-Ceiling

I cannot imagine toilet-free life.

Kebabs have a unique attribute compared to other consumables. To unlock this effect you need to wolf down a big ass kebab really fast, like under 10 minutes or so and wait for the effect to kick in. If done correctly your movements should feel unbelievably heavy to the point where you literally cannot move at all.

-Downtown Alanya Kebab magazine issue no.198

I don't know about franchises, but when it comes to individual games, nothing surpasses GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark for me. I feel like modern FPS design has gone backwards compared to what these two games had to offer.

At the risk of being redundant:

Call of Duty 4 is still the best MMFPS I've played. Definitely a must if you haven't played it yet, and you have good timing with the remaster coming out. If you angrily tweet at Activision they probably still won't consider a standalone release. But if you make enough fake accounts they'll implement a new purchase model through which you'll have to buy bags of Doritos and get unique codes to unlock singular missions. Anyhow moving on.....

Portal 2 is a brilliant - and humorous - puzzler/platformer.

Bioshock is a must with its' immersive atmosphere and story, but you've likely heard that before. I worship this game like a preteen at the Twilight premiere.

Destiny is fun - if you ignore most of its year 1 faults and have a crew to play with. Pretty much a no-no for solo. Raiding and other cooperative/competitive areas are where this game shines, but as for the story; James Patterson could have written it without falling behind on his 18 novels a year quota.

Hopefully I helped a little?

1.How is CoD 4 an MMFPS though? Does it support hundreds of players on a map? I thought it was 32. 2.And is Portal a shooter?

3.I also think Bioshock's story doesn't hold if the game's story segments weren't on rails.

1. Misused an acronym there. I meant MM as modern military first-person shooter, but I guess it actually stands for massively multiplayer?

2. Well it's first person and you have portal guns that you shoot so close enough lol

3. You're probably right. Still a good game though

#1 Amb-ass-ador

The Timesplitters trilogy is the best!

Honestly, no idea about those versions...I've played it back when it realesed on PC, it's mostly tactical FPS, it stuck in my head as a game that depicts Vietnam war really well (not that I know anything about that other then from documentaries) and LAN multiplayer was really fun, if anything but deadly.

It's in Take-Two's possession (Illlusion Softworks is 2K Czech for quite some time now), so no idea will it ever release on GOG or Steam (which doesn't surprise me, Mafia 1 is also not on either).

The console version is probably inferior but I'll try to track it down.

Thanks for the recommendation :)

SP wise I will say Doom.
MP wise I will say Halo 5
