Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is there any technology cooler than SEGA's Super Sprite Scaler Engine for its time or even in general?

I dont think that I have ever been so impressed with gaming techology the way I am with SEGA's Super Sprite Scaler series. The 3D pioneer Yu Suzuki and his team at AM2 designed this engine as every game Suzuki has ever designed was always intended for 3D:

"designs were always 3D from the beginning. All the calculations in the system were 3D, even from Hang-On. I calculated the position, scale, and zoom rate in 3D and converted it backwards to 2D. So I was always thinking in 3D."

Please... suck your dick harder Yu Suzuki.

GALAXY FORCE 2

POWERDRIFT

Can you guys believe not 1 polygon is being used in any of these examples? This is impressive even now, especially Galaxy Force 2 and Power Drift as they look in incredible. All of these games are available on the 3DS and with the added 3D effect they pop even more.

Sega's technical mastery in the arcades during the 80s and most of the 90s was head and shoulder above everyone else.

Suzuki is a true visionary and there aren't many game makers that deserved to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame more than him.

Sega arcade games from the 80s and early 90s are pretty amazing when you compare it to the competition.

It took a long time for some of these games to get decent console ports.

There was a recent digital foundry retro which focused on Segas daytona USA, looking back at it and comparing it to pc offerings at the time.... I really miss when Sega were one of the key players in gaming

I was very big sega fan.. And yes Sega did some very good games.. BUT

Double Dragon (1987) Bomb jack (1984) Solomons key (1986) Gunsmoke (1985) Ghosts 'n Goblins (1985) Ikari (1986) 1942 (1984) Track & Field (1983) And lots of other..  "insane big in the arcade" was not made by Sega.. Companys like Capcom.. SNG.. Tecmo.. Technōs.. Konami also made high quality games.. (just saying :) )

(Sega gave us the Master System.. and won me)

The point of the thread isn't about the quality of the games per se, but about the quality of their technical aspects. None of the games you mentioned were technical marvels the way Sega games were.
