I used to be atheist. I now believe in something bigger than myself. My father passed away last year. I stayed with him during the wake, and after everyone left, it was just the 2 of us. After the funeral, and everyone was gone, I finally slept, and I got to talk with him in my dream. Even though he had passed, he was still trying to save me.

And my dog passed this last July. We took him to our ancestral land and buried him. A week later, I was at home, and I heard him sneeze, like he always used to sneeze. It freaked me the hell out.

Is god real? I have no idea. But there is something out there, and I now believe in a afterlife.

Man, I dream about my dead dog all the time. I really loved him and I always brush it off as just missing the good buddy that he was. But it is a strange feeling...

After our dog died I saw her too, or thought to see her now and then while fully awake. It's a natural process, familiar patterns combined with loss. Sounds can trigger strong memories too. The brain likes to pattern match stuff all the time and the more you crave something to quicker you'll recognize something close.

After studying cognitive science I've never trusted my own mind anymore :)

It is funny how we much we love our pets. But, to be fair, some pets seem to go the extra mile to be loved. this particular dog was really cool, it was my best friend as a teenager.

I don't trust my eyes, my mind nor my memory so it would be pretty hard to convince me in the first place. Yet if it is real then I guess it would feel like waking up in North Korea, discovering a ruthless dictator has been operating behind the scenes all along. Nature can be called cruel however nature is indifferent to all suffering. If God were real he would have chosen to be indifferent.

But how would you react to Him? Would love Him and worship, would you be grateful for the universe and life itself or would you, as Chris Hitchens, hate Him as a vilain.

By the way, your indifference argument is explained by the Holy Bible, reading it you realize God is the main protagonist of the Universe´ history.  But going further in that line of thinking would sound like evangelism and this is not the point of the thread.

So, I guess your answer is that you do not see God as the hero or vilain of the tale, but as indifferent. very interesting.

Definitely would not love and worship out of my own free will. Grateful no. Indifferent yes. The same way a kid would regard an ant farm.

I would probably kill myself. Not because anything of significance would change but because religious people will become too obnoxious for me to bear.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I do not question your feelings, I do believe your sincerity. But contrary to ants, we are capable of love and hate. The ants are indifferent to the kid because they are not capable of love or hate, and I doubt the level o awareness they can really have of the kid.

Anyways, cool answer.

Man, I don't know. It's such a complex question. And one for which the two options you provided are not enough.
Is that god exists the only discovery in this hypothetical situation, or do we know more about said god? For example, my first thought would be - "Okay, so god is real. But WHICH god? The Jewish one? The Muslim one? The Mormon one? The Quaker one? Which parts of a bible are true? All of them? None of them? Only some of them? If so, which parts? Where does the word of god end and the word of man begin? Because if I'm going to follow god's rules, I need to know which ones actually count. Otherwise how do I know if what I'm doing pleases him or angers him?"

If all I know is that god exists, and perhaps even which book to follow, I'd probably say no, because I can't think of any religious text that doesn't contain at least a few words of guidence I find disagreeable, and put simply - I refuse to follow somebody whom I am unable to aproach and ask to explain to me the reasoning behind their rules. It could be he has good reason for this or that really backwards sounding rule, in which case I don't think it's too much to ask for an explanation. If I just have to go with him on such things on blind faith, then how do I know what I'm doing is REALLY the right thing?

How do even know if he's real?

Fuck, I'm right back where I started!

No Vivster, I meant, YOU had hard evidence, not everyone. Somehow, if YOU, and only you, recieved enough hard evidence, enough to satisfy you, that God is real, would you love Him and worship Him, or, would you, as Hitchens, still hate Him?

Or would you find a third option as some of our buddies in the thread?

Yes, I decided to let it open ended in purpose, it would not be as fun if I said the God of the Bible, it would sound like I am cornering you guys. So, I left it for you to decide.

I take you would want to know more about God and follow the rules, very interesting. To be fair, Hitchens said that the God of the Bible was the one he hated.

I think if people from 1BC or Year 1 can see us right now, they might think that we're Gods.

We're even out living those people from that era by decades too.

Well, some people died at 30, some others lived till 80. Even John the apostle got to 92, according to jewish first century historian Flavius Josephus. But, to be fair, he was well threated in prison because the romans feared his death would cause a revolt.

I take it you are talking about how high tech our society became in 2 thousand years. It is indeed very impressive, specially because most of it was achieved in less than 60 years, probably  the fumes of the world wars are the reason of such extraordinary progress. Fear does help one to achieve impressive things.

But, how about the question from the OP?
