The female otaku is Japan's new boom. Just look at all the new anime and manga aimed at females.
The only problem I have is when these polls try to lump in everything together. It's nearly impossible to extrapolate meaning from that.

Given the decline of console gaming since the ps2 era and handheld this generation (in Japan), the answer is simple this reflects the mobile gaming sector the most. Rise in female playing games, rise in mobile gamers, hmmm I wonder if they are corelated at all.
Also more on your point lawlight, the study validity must be questions in general as well, in reflection to other markets. Chinese gaming site would not have accurate data on the rest of the world, and unless it shows the methods involved, we can not form any actual conclusion from this.
