Forums - Gaming Discussion - 2016: Worst year of gaming EVER?

I agree 2016 has been bad. We can definitely see the new mentality of developers, to make these big, polished online-focused games that never let go of the player but are designed to keep the gamer playing and playing and spend money on microtransactions. And the cinematic dumbed down design is as strong as ever in AAA games.

I hate this tipe of cynical design.

But there are a lot of great indie games coming out regularly, and in four weeks we'll get Battlefield WW1 which is simply phenomenal.

Then we have VR coming which is bringing the first new experiences to TV, Movies, and Games in over two decades.

That is a funny statement.  Makes me almost want to laugh.  VR won't be mainstream till another 20 years when the tech gets better and the price drops considerably.  Even then I doubt it will ever become mainstream.

1983 i think when the video game crash happened because the quality of most games was terrible.

Yea it was almost on par with most smartphone game quality.

I've been really satisfied with my games this year and there's still a lot to release.

Bought:

Uncharted 4
Doom
Ratchet & Clank
Dark Souls 3
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
No Mans Sky (I don't blindly follow the hype and i knew what to expect with this so i wasn't disappointed)
Bioshock Collection
(A few more games from 2015 as well)

To Buy:

Mafia 3
FFXV
Battlefield 1
COD4/IW
The Last Guardian
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Skyrim
Gravity Rush 2
PSVR along with a few games

So great so far and a lot to look forward too so i'm happy with this year so far.

There are more games I care about this year then 2014/15, so no.

extremely mediocre in terms of high tier games. I can think of hardly anything that released this year that I'd consider a 'great' game

no legendary new IPs or legendary installments. the "Doom" remake is practically the only thing I've found a little surprising

Don't think one can assign a title like that to a year until the year is up.

It had Shin Megami Tensei: Apocalypse this year, so no. Btw, Mr. OP, this idea for a thread happens every year. Hell, it happened earlier this year. I will say, while this wasn't the worst year for gaming. It may just be the worst in terms of threads. My personal threads are evidence of that

EDIT: Okay, okay, let me rephrase this: 2016 is the worst year for the industry in my opinion. If you have played games this year you enjoy, good for you, but every year has good and bad games. I am just pointing out shady business practices, questionable releases, and hype culture. I myself am excited for Final Fantasy XV, and the year has had a few good releases. I am not saying "Everee gaym suks this yeer!!" I am saying it has been a bumpy ride.

I'll list some reasons.

  1. Microtransactions in games like Overwatch, Deus Ex, etc. Microtransactions have been a thing for a while.
  2. Not a single Xbox One exclusive release XB1 fans don't seem to care, they're more worried about "Microsoft" exclusives for some reason.
  3. Sony making confusing hardware plans A slim normal PS4 and a 4K PS4... I fail to see confusion in that.
  4. Nintendo showcase is the most mediocre line-up for both Wii U and 3DS Don't disagree.
  5. NX rumor overexposure More like underexposure. However, due to everyone's curiosity, we've all turned into private investigators.
  6. Battlefield 1 VS COD Infinite Warfare is beating a dead horse, and none of them are really bringing anything new to the table. Then don't buy it. I don't like them either, but there are apparently a lot of people who do.
  7. Konami. Enough said. Konami got their just desserts and are now the laughing stock of the industry.
  8. No Man's Sky shows once again hype culture is awful, but consumers sucker into hype over and over again. The only thing in NMS that wasn't in the game was multiplayer, and it was otherwise pretty much exactly what they advertised; an exploration game in a practically infinite galaxy.
  9. The Division is generic as hell yet sells millions. (This is more of an opinion) Same as CoD and Battlefield.
  10. Street Fighter V does not deliver to expectations It served as a prime example of what you get when a developer is afraid to delay, but it also showed a fantastic way to do microtransactions- pay for them, or earn them in game.
  11. Seriously... how has the industry not been burnt out by FPS games??? Because it's a very fluid genre. People got tired of war shooters, so they switched to space shooters. We'll see a new kind of shooter, soon, unless we backtrack to war shooters.
I can't name a year in gaming where I have bought so few games. I seriously haven't bought one game released in 2016, but I've bought plenty of games released in 2015 and back.

Sorry Op, I can't agree. The first half of the year, in particular, was great. Within three months I had Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted 4, Dark Souls 3, Doom, and Overwatch, and I'm probably forgetting a few. I don't really see how the Pro is that confusing a concept, and, while the Xbox hasn't had a great year in terms of exclusives, it does seem to have its best game yet in Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War is garnering positive impressions as well (note: I count console exclusives as exclusives). There are certain games I'm still very excited for this year that I do not dare name in fear that they will be delayed, but so far it's been about the same as most years, better than some, worse than others.
