Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pachter: If the NX flops, Nintendo will still have 9.5 Billion dollars in the bank (They have 10 last time Pachter checked)

Nintendo has 5bn cash. 10bn total assets. Approx..

They have just about short term investments as Cash. I think it is also 4.5bn cash and 4.5bn short term investment (aka Cash and Cash Short Term Investment part of the balance sheet).

ehhh but Nintendo's assets are mostly cash assets. Sony's has very little cash and I'm pretty sure still debt, the majority of what is considered their 'assets' is loads and loads of electronics and things from their different divisions

I'm just saying liquid assets are generally considered much more valuable. Sony does not have a lot of assets that can be immediately be turned into billions of cash out of nowhere

Sony actually does have 37.8 billion US dollars in current assets ...

Mountaindew is not wrong, Sony has almost the same number of liabilities and a lot of their assets are not liquid ... they can't just cash in a factory at the bank for example.

This. So, it's about US$1.8B less than in 2012. For comparison Sony has US$37.8B.

Yea, the Wii U did a number on them.  If the NX is a repeat of the Wii U, or even just slightly more successful, Nintendo will be done with HW.  My guess is they will try to go mobile before they go 3rd party on the PS or XB, but we'll see.

I just checked and it was US$15.4B back in 2010. So, that's a US$6.8B drop in 6 years. That's with the 3DS's success. The NX needs to make a big impact if they want to combine handheld and console sales.

Depends on what he means by "very little" cash ...

He's right that a bigger protion of Nintendo's assets are liquefiable ...

That's only short term assets. Total assets are 148bn.

Short term liabilities are 43bn. Total liabilities are 126bn.

Net tangibleassets are about 11bn.

Now you have the full picture.

Nintendo doesn't seem to list much under "Net Goodwill" and "Net Other Intangiables", whereas Sony lists huge amounts under there, it's actually fairly refreshing how honest Nintendo's balance sheet is, no bullshit. Usually companies will flub any intangiable number of assets to make their assets to liabilities look better than it actually is.

Why bringing  sony here for comparison? To show us that sony has more money? companies wars? So needless!

Anyway,  irrelevant comparison...  However, I will follow you to the wars because you deserve an answer!

Please, remind me how many divisions sony has? Hmmm...

Nintendo's money are in the ovewhelming majority  from gaming since it's just a video game Company... Sony's? Music, Movies, cameras. tv e.t.c?

Yep. Bogus comparison.

compare net assets..... assets less liabilities.

I suspected that he compared different things, I wasn't sure, so I chose to comment  only the two numbers in the comparison and how they look when you put the sizes of the companies in comparison! Confusing these things is very s frequent phenomenon, like the comparison of operating profit  vs net loss and the converse!

Thank you for the confirmation!

So, what's   the exact sony's number that corresponds to 9b figure of Nintendo? ( I'm bored to search it )

You don't have to clarify that or the rest of these things as I already have some ideas about accounting so I know what I'm getting myself into ...

It's about the brand name though, not just how much money they have in the bank
