Forums - Sony Discussion - Ruh-Roh - Will Sony be dwarfed by Apple's iPhone 7 conference?

If they worried Sony wouldn't have booked the event on the same day Apple have had their iPhone conference on for the last few years.

Why do people keep saying they are different audiences? That is just silly.

How many gamers do you know that don't own a smartphone?

Fact is, Sony will want a ton of free advertising from the various media outlets in the world. Each of these media outlets only have so much time / space they are going to put towards tech news. Which one is the average JoeBob going to see at primetime on 9/7 and 9/8? The iPhone 7.

Due to Apple's event, the only 'market' that will even know that there is a new PS4 will be those that already know one is coming. However, had Apple's event been during a different month, it likely would have lead all mass media tech news for those couple days.

I think that is big.

My sources tell me that everyone interested in the PS4 Neo are Android users who don't give a crap about the new iPhone.

Seriously, though, WW which do you think is going to gain more attention?  A console that has captured 55%+ of the WW console market? Or a phone that has captured about 15% of the WW phone market?  Sure, in the US and a few other countries the Apple announcement will be big and take up some of the headlines, but sites will make sure to keep both near the top of their front pages.  Everywhere else in the world, the PS4 will be shown more interest.

The one that sells more. Are you seriously arguing that PS4 news has more impact in "everywhere else in the world" than Apple and its iphone?!

http://www.theverge.com/2016/4/26/11512466/apple-iphone-ipad-sales-q2-2016

"

Apple sold 51.2 million iPhones and 10.3 million iPads in the first three months of 2016"

They sold more iphones in three months than the PS4 did since release. Many more.

Do gamers really just have an odd view on their favorite hobby? This thread contains posts that seem just off.

Different markets.

For my somewhat decent proof of this; iPhone 6 released the same week as FIFA 16 and NBA2k16, with both games breaking records despite the iPhone release.

The question isn't whether they were released the same week, it's whether they were announced the same day.  And even if they were, you're now contrasting hardware and software.  I don't think what you've listed is a parallel at all.

-shrug-

The point was more a "videogame industry can still thrive despite bigger things happening at the same time".

In the age of Twitter and Facebook, no single news story will ever dominate all others, especially when it comes to tech. Word of mouth will be good enough, as will Sony's own advertising of the product.

Please don't turn this is into sales war. Console is not a Mobile phone and vice-versa.
Playstation conference will not be overshadowed because they are targeting a specific audience.
It will be over gaming sites. There will be a lot of talks on Gaming site regarding the conference.
I don't see any correlation on the 2. Two different machines targeting different audiences.

I will not see much news on apple conference on a gaming specific sites.
I see this thread as attention seeking thread. Oh well whatever.

So let's make it personal to the OP instead of a sales war. Great.

Why does this have to be a negative though?

Cant there be any iPhone users that check tech new outlets, looking for stuff on the phone but also see right below it, is a news article about a new PS4 neo ? They view the PS4 article as well, and decide to get a brand spanking new PS4 neo as well? or maybe instead of a new iphone?

Also differnt markets. I honestly believe the effect, will be very little if any.

This going to be the more likely outcome, as tech sites are going to want to keep both on their homepage that day to increase traffic from both types of consumers.

I've been an Apple Macintosh user since 1993. After a brief hiatus, I got back into console gaming in 1997 with the original PlayStation. With that being said, I cannot stand the iPhone and even less so Apple's current ecosystem. PlayStation has been my primary gaming platform for almost 20 years now. So honestly, I don't how to two are going to heavily impact one another since like most everyone else has said that two different audiences are being targeted. There's little to no comparison. You just deprived the world of precious bandwidth.

Sept 9th was last year's event. Apple does not hold their conference on the same date every year.

Plus, people do overlook stuff.

Ruh-Roh sounds like Lali-ho! (Is that a good sign or a bad one I'm not sure.)

Well, Sony and Apple are at different scales of importance. Of course Apple has a lot more visibility than sony and will absorb most of the mediatic attention.

However Sony was never in a position to compete with that. So I'm not sure this is important.

It has to be important. Does anyone really think that Sony (or any company) would put on a major release event without the ROI including free advertising amongst mass media?

To me, this is now a loss or rather a big reduction in what Sony would have expected had no Apple event been scheduled on same day.
