In March 2015 Nintendo announced that they will develop smartphone apps in order to increase awareness for their IPs and drive sales of their dedicated hardware. In April 2016 they announced that an Animal Crossing app is scheduled for this fall, plus they hinted that said app could possibly communicate with the next main installment of the series (which will obviously be an NX game).

If they do this right it could be a huge success.

Animal Crossing is very popular.
