Forums - Sony Discussion - [PS4 Slim] New DS4 uses same battery

From the video, it looked like the big light on the back of the controller was not litting. It could indicate that only the smaller led will be active most fo the time, making the controller use less power. Probably the big led will only be activated when the controller needs to be tracked by the PS Camera.

Unfortunately, the video had quite a bit of external lightining, so it was hard to see the big led. If both lights are on all the time, it's more likely that the "new" led is just an opening that allows the light of the regular led to pass trough, so things would be the same.

It's rumoured to have a newer Bluetooth chip that could use less energy.

Mhmm I see. Hopefully that is the case. Both my xbox one and wiiU pro controller last a lot longer than the ps4 controller so I am hoping by the time I get the Neo, the controller will be revised with a great battery life.

Yeah, it is known that the battery in the DS4 is worse than what the competition is offering.

People just had hopes that the battery got an upgrade but that doesn't seem to happen.

If the controller uses less energy, the same battery can produce longer battery life.

Exactly what I wanted to point out.

How long is the charger cable though? The battery life isn't really a problem since I don't mind having it plugged in, but the current charger cables are so short that it's impossible to have it plugged in and sit a decent amount away from the TV at the same time.

I think it's around 1.2 or 1.4 m. I just bought a 3 m USB extension cord, so it isn't an issue anymore. You could also buy a charging dock and have 2 DS4 and just keep switching between them. I did that with the DS3.

You do know that they use a standard Micro-USB cable, the same as pretty much any phone or tablet right? :P

Just buy a longer Micro USB cable from somewhere, just looked and found a 3m one for £1.59.

The Wii U Pro controller has a 1300mah battery, and it lasts ten times as long as the ds4 battery. I'm sure some improvements an still be made to improve battery life without upping the capacity.

I usually plug the controller to a normal power outlet or my notebook so I don't have a cable crossing the room.

Did you properly measured it in gaming hours for each or you are using that same method that gives this difference because you play one 10x more than the other?

I don't own a DS4 yet, I'm just going by what others have told me (6-10hrs). I do own a Pro controller, and I can honestly say it lasts at least 50+hrs. I've owned it for 3yrs and only charged it 3-4 times -- I've never even seen the low battery warning. Nintendo rates it for 80hrs, and I'm actually inclined to believe them.

It is important to note that Nintendo's Pro Controller lacks the analog triggers, speaker, touch pad, and lights of the DS4. I've also been told the rumble is weak, but that hasn't been my experience.

I see... I don't like my DS4 battery life as much as I like the DS3... the DS4 can probably survive a full gaming weekend (12+h) but the DS3 would usually survive a whole week (so probably 30+h) I never measured any of them scientifically.

And if you have 50h on Pro Controller and only charged 4 times you use it very little =]

The Wii U pro Controler Battery is a BEAST!!!

Ha, that's true. I prefer to play most 3D games with KB+M, so my Pro controller only sees periodic use.

12hrs on the DS4 may actually be almost enough for me. I'm pretty lazy about plugging in my wireless devices. I usually just plug them in once a week, if I can get away with it, so somewhere in the realm of 14-24hrs is ideal.
