Forums - Politics Discussion - Pet ownership - morally reprehensible?

Yeah, sure those fluffy little kittens/puppies or whatever you have may be cute and all. But really think about it, you're holding another living being captive for your own personal pleasure. You're denying them the chance to live their own lives, the chance to choose and acquire their own food, the chance to do anything they want to do whenever they want to do it and possibly even the chance to reproduce as well. And that's the people who don't abuse their pets, for those it's so much worse...

How do you justify it? Can you even justify it?

Because pets are not narutal animals they where made by humans for humans.  No Pugs or Chihuahua's in the wild.

They are domesticated animals bred for certain traits.  Chihuahua's have been bred for a long time and are probably an offshoot of a companion dog of the Toltec civilization according to Wiki.  There are packs of Chihuahua's in the wild in Mexico (stray dogs) and now apparently here in the USA.

Imagine dying to a pack of Chihuahuas... I mean... if you were critically injured and you rang for an ambulance. you couldn't say what happened to you or the emergency services would just think you were pranking them.

If the op was smarter then he would have brought the issue of the pet trade into light. I have an iguana which was probably sent out of Central America in a box. They tend to send large shipments of reptiles in boxes with no food, water and little air. Most die on the way to the pet market.

I fucked up my iguana at first because I didn't have the proper lights (they need UVA and especially UVB).  So he developed a bone disease that he would eventually of died from if I didn't get the proper lights.  He might have a messed up jaw but it could have gotten worse.  He is now 16 years old and still kicking it.  I try to take him outside more to get some natural sun now that I have a house for 2 years and he seems to enjoy the backyard.  Iguanas in wild live up to 20 years so I believe that even though I fucked up his jaw I eventually provided him with loving care.

I had an older Mexican friend from work tell me awhile back that his uncle or cousin wanted to get a Chihuahua from the wild in Mexico.  They drove out to a place where they supposedly roam.  Said that all of a sudden a huge pack of Chihuahuas started running towards them over the hills in distance.  Took them about 1 min before they said fuck this and got back in vehicle to get out of there.

I think I'd die laughing at the little things lol.

I have no pets, and you can easily justify it. It is being fed, nutured and cared for, plus it was by selective breeding of past generations when we were hunters, that made them what they are today. On top of which the more people have pets, the less likely they produce in large number.

How does that justify it exactly? I mean if you were to keep humans as pets but feed, nurture and care for them would that be ok?

Is the alternative that the human will be dropped off at a kill shelter or run over by a car?

If you live in Gaza, you must have balls of Steel. I know people who go there yearly to deliver projects and talk about how hard it is. How the hell do you get in and out without being harassed? This is a secret you must share as pretty much everyone i know has been harassed going in and coming out, and some even turned away.

Well, I am Middle Eastern...I'd be shocked if I was harassed. One thing you should do is not make yourself stand out if you're not from there.

Also, I don't always have the kindest experiences there. Worst moment was when some IDF soldiers(about 10ish) came to arrest some teenager boy. Forgot what he did, but the soldiers thought throwing tear gas and shooting rubber bullets wildly was the right thing to do.

I even had a family member be beaten up senseless by some IDF soldiers for being in a protest. Some disgusting stuff happens there. When I see people complaining about police in America, a lot of people don't realize that America's police are thousands of times better than the policemen in third world countries

My friend was on the Mavi Marmara so i know what you mean.

They were bred to live with humans. It's not cruel.

Americans have all the right to complain about their police. What you have experimented is extreme but does not invalid what others suffer too. I'm from a third world country too and here the police are useless most of the time, I actually wish sometimes that they had more freedom to arrest people and gain more respect since almost no one actually take them seriously. It's a shame really.

OT: I have a cat and she is the laziest animal I've ever seen. She likes to sleep all day and eat, that's it. I sometimes have to "force" her to get her out to the garden and run or just play with her because the vet told me to do so. She chose us too, to put it in a way, I was going to buy smth when she run into my house and never left.
