Forums - Gaming Discussion - Eurogamer: Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers (It also connects to your TV, and runs cartridges)

I've seen quite a few "bad idea" posts but only one in-depth explanation as to why someone doesn't see this as a good thing. What's the major drawback, here (besides JWein)?

See my previous post. The way Eurogamer worded this makes it sound like Nintendo's trying to catch both the home console and handheld audiences with a system that appeals to neither. There's a parallel to be made with the WiiU's attempt to capture both the "hardcore" and "casual" audiences...

He may be dealing in absolutes, which is not applicable in this argument, but there is some truth to what he's saying.

There's also some truth to the statement "most Nintendo console owners also game on an other console or on PC". Does that mean that most of these people don't play games like the Witcher on their other systems because they play Nintendo games?

Absolutely not. But, it would be preferable to both Nintendo and it's userbase if these games were available, and being purchased on a Nintendo platform. Very often, they are not available, and when they are, very often, they are not purchased in as many numbers as they are on competing platforms. These two dynamics seem to create a self sustaining vortex of third party apathy, shared by both consumers and publishers.

I have not bought a Nintendo console since the GC...well outside of the DSXL I got for my son anyway. So I can't really speak much on them....but I am torn with this idea. Because it makes me question the price and power if true. Will this replace both the Wii U and the 3DS then since it is portable and a home console at the same time? and if not how would it work having both on the market? So would they be developing portable games for both the 3DS and NX?

I think it has potential but what audience are they aiming for with this? I guess I am on the fence and will just wait and see how I fell when we have more information.

So basically confirms that the NX won't be very powerful. but what level will it be? At Wii level? Or Wii U? It's a pity they can no longer push boundaries.

At least their portable idea is good.

Powerful enough to run the new Sonic game and the new Dragon Quest apparantly. So... at least close to current gen consoles.

But... power close to the new consoles in portable form means a higher price point. :x

I'm really intrigued to see the actual reveal.  They'll have a hard time selling an expensive handheld.  I wonder how they'll find a balance.

For me, it's the carts. Having a system that runs on carts is a death sentence for third party support, and this thing isn't going to survive without them. No matter what anyone says about how cheap they are now, they will always be more expensive than disks of the same game on competing systems. Unless Nintendo is willing to eat the cost differences of manufacturing carts by giving 3rd party's better royalty deals, I can't see why anyone in their right mind would support something like this.

If I'm EA, and I have Madden 2017, and I'm porting it to all systems, it is going to cost me significantly more money to port the exact same game to NX. If I'm EA, I won't deal with that. And that's on top of not using x86, which I don't actually think is a big deal by itself.

I also cannot imagine how the form factor on this thing can possibly made appealing. If it's portable, but has XBO-level gear, I can't imagine that not being unsightly. I can't imagine the battery life being acceptable. I can't imaging the detatchable controllers being big enough to be comfortable for most people with adult sized hands. That's all more nebulus, but this does not sound good to me.

Or at least good enough to be a success. I'll probably like it like I liked the Wii U.

To anyone who thinks this idea will bring in less money than separated handheld and console (WiiU and 3DS), dont think about lost sales on the home console (because they are fairly small) but the improved software sales overall due to their being more games delivered to the larger install base.
Even if Nintendo's next handheld sells like the 3DS and doesn't gain more consumers it would have more games and I would assume seeing as its Nintendo's 1st Party studios being freed up more great titles worth buying.

Consider all that and what I said.

Two uncomfortably tiny controllers?

And that's not happeneing.

You're being confusing, unless you're saying that this leak is false.

This rumor presents this device as a handheld that can act as a homeconsole. The thing is it can be said otherwise, this is a homeconsole that can be used as a handheld. The NX is both and should be see it as that, not a handheld that can be used as a console or a console that can be used as a handheld. IM sure NIntendo will promote it like that: NX is both things.

The only thing that would be disappointing is if the Nvidia Parker/Tegra X2 really uses Cortex-A57 cores next to it's Denver2 cores. The A57 cores output quite a bit of heat and are a bit outdated compared to the A72 cores and especially compared to the upcoming A73 core (unless Nintendo gets a custom version from NVIDIA) .
