Forums - Sony Discussion - Spiderman PS4 is a beginning of an ongoing series with Insomniac and Sony.

Insomniac better not pull that ratchet and clank stuff, sacrificing 60fps for 1080p. I have alot of hopes that spiderman, my favorite comic hero, will be the new arkham series that we need, and can potentially be the hero this gen that we deserve.

It's not like xbox or nintendo can't make their own exclusives about other comic book characters. There's nothing anti-consumer about it.  Exclusives aren't anti-consumer.

I was on Reddit the other day, and somebody said that this move "took away their choice" and that "they don't want me to play their game".

It's like....nobody is stopping you from choosing to play the game. It is readily availble to you. Sure, there's a barrier for entry ($350 for a PS4), but what's stopping you from crossing that barrier? Other than you're own stubbornness?

"I bought console X, but game Y is on a different console. They're so anti-consumer! I guess they don't want my money!" It's like everybody forgot how business works.

If sony made it so that those spider-man games were only availible as digital only to stop second hand sales then I could see that as anti-consumer. Sounds like some people who don't understand exclusives and that it's a business practice that doesn't hurt consumers.  Just like Big Macs and Whopers do for fast food.

More Anti Consumer measures it seems. Now Sony is locking such a well known character as Spiderman their platform..

Why do you play your games mainly on the platform that is the most anti consumer?

Do they really have any ties with these heroes? If they do, why not. Else not possible.

A Company tie like Sony with Spiderman isn't that S[ider-man was soly created by Sony, no that goes directly towards Steve Ditko and STan Lee. Sony merely own the rights to publishing a SPiderman Movie or game, they do not print and control the comics, so MS and Nintendo could easily do the same and buy somehting with their own amounts of wealth, it;s what Sony has done and hell it;s what DIsney has done with the entire Star Wars franchise.

If Nintendo made an exclusive Iron Man game and it is good, I might even buy an NX earlier than I thought.

It would cost them ALOT of money buying any of marvel superheroes. They can probably sign a contract with marvel to have exclusive videogame rights but its a risk because not every superheroes can make a good video game so it might not sell well to make a profit

It depends, some heroes aren't worth the same amount of cash as say Superman or Batman, it's why Fantastic 4 heroes are basically not worth as much with their comics having done poorly for years along with each live action movie becoming more of a mediocre super hero flick. Also the heroes aren't some unobtainable entity, Sony has claimed one with their own wealth and MS recently claimed a popular networking site let alone a popular indie game with their vast amounts of wealth. Heroes can be worth a decent amount of money, but they are not worth trillions or something out of MS's bank.

There have also been times where Spider-Man based games haven't been as good either, every hero has their ups and downs, Batman's ups have been going steady for a number of years now, Superman's were in the late 80's and 90's, possibly maybe even in the future he may come back in a big way that Batman and Iron Man have.

I posed this idea since Sony has been using it for a decent number of years, if they can do it than really everyone else should be able to capitalize on that concept of owning a hero and locking it to a piece of hardware, that is until everyone gets sick of that concept and wishes for those heroes to be able to roam free, though money talks and it has the last say over words.

Sony and Spiderman are related to each other, Sony has some sort of rights to Spiderman, which is why they could do this. MS and Nintendo have no ties at all to Green Lantern and Iron Man, so they can't just give Warner Bros and Disney some money and make an exclusive game.

Also Warner Bros has its own game publisher so they won't give someone else the rights to publish a game based on a DC hero.

EA are a big third party publisher and this is the kind of publisher that would get the rights to a superhero game as they can make multiplatform games. Activision had the license to Spiderman games but didn't use it well. EA managed to perform well commercially with Star Wars. Sony also allowed Marvel to makea  Spiderman film and bring him to MCU despite having the rights to Spiderman movies so this might be thereason for that.

Sony is locking down some awesome deals. This truly is starting to look like PS2 again. Exclusives have always made for the best games, so it is very nice to have a platform dominant enough that we can go back to developing games around making the best game, and not making a game that has to be made twice and equal.

So glad Insomniac is behind this as well. They have delivered so many great experiences overthe years, it is quite a blessing to have such a talented team working on a mass market franchise for once.

Hopefully this game sells well, and we can see a couple of real high quality Spiderman games over the next decade.

Going by Spider-Man's history, Sony isn't tied to the hero itself, the only historical tie to him was made entirwely by money, not that Sony paid Stan lee and Ditko to create the hero specifically for their specific use and platform. It;s no different when Disney buys an existing idea from another company, the same way it didn't stop Sony buying the rights from Marvel and vice versa for Disney and Marvel along with other studios owning other heroes out there.

Having rights isn't rights to the original concept that someone else created, they only own the current image of a hero for a few markets, they never created him and aren't going to own him till the end of time. If you look at the entire history of SPider-Man, you can see a point where Sony very much handed over money to buy the rights, something which they never once created nor previously owned was bought from Marvel, the same way the other companies can buy rights, there is no special rite of passage or rule in the book where no other company other than Sony can buy a hero.

Warner does what it wants, but that isn't to say it will never ever make deals nor never ever sell a hero, it's far too easy to say nothing never ever happens, but without seeing into nor being from the future we are not even certain of said proclamations, unless someone here is from the future there is no way to say they never ever will do this or that, just look at companies that started around the 18th or 19th century that are still around today, centuries ago they were doing something entirely different compared to what they do today, time changes practically everything.

Really owning the rights to a hero isn't only something Sony is allowed to do, we should really do away with that narrow pov, despite explinations, that doesn't explain nor set the future results in stone.
