Forums - Sony Discussion - New Dual Shock 4 controller confirmed

A new Dual Shock 4 controller is on the way. Could this be a new DS4 elite controller to ship with the NEO when it launches?

Here is the FCC registration tag:

Notice how the serial number has gone from CUHZCT1 which is on all current DS4's to CUHZCT2. It's the first time a DS4 uses the number 2.

Here is some more of the FCC documentation:

I'm hoping for a customizable DS4 elite controller like these SCUF ones.

Very interesting... Have previous generation Dual Shocks ever received such updates?

To say the least. It must be a better version of the DS4 that will ship with the NEO console. I wonder what changes it will have?

this could just as easily be a very minor redesign to improve analogue rubber abrasion or battery life or sth

Both of which desperately needs to happen.

They also could be ditching the giant light bars that eat battery life.

Possible but having opened up and modified many Dual Shock 4s, I can tell you that some internal components have been changed by Sony over time and the serial number remained the same.

From the FCC documents it appears the Bluetooth antenna is getting an upgrade. Why?

And why after all the different versions of the DS4 with the same serial number, change it to version number 2?

It must have some redesigned elements to up the version number.

Makes sense to have a better controller ship with the better NEO PS4 console. Why ship the NEO with the busted old DS4?

I think this could just be a better battery, the current one has terrible battery life, it's the only real fault I've had with the DS4.

The 800mA possibly refers to the battery of the new model, which is even less than the standard DS4(1000mA)....

Edit: nevermind, it says 800mA on the back of my DS4s too.

As far as I know the DS4 still uses the Bluetooth 2.1 protocol.

There have been A LOT of Bluetooth improvements over the last years. Bluetooth 4.0 - 4.2 only drain a fraction of power, which should improve battery life. For Bluetooth 5 there will be improvements in all areas (power drain, range, speed): http://www.techradar.com/news/networking/bluetooth-5-everything-you-need-to-know-1323060

I really hope that the new DS4-model (transmitter) and the PS Neo (receiver) both support Bluetooth 5 or at least 4.2: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_v5

P.S.: Damn, according to the FCC document, it it still Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR? WTF? That is still tech from 2007, which was already a shame when the PS4 released in 2013! Bluetooth 4.0 (aka Bluetooth low energy) is available since 2010: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_v4.0

I hope that this is only an enhanced model for PS4 and that the Neo gets a "DS4.5" with newer bluetooth specs.
