Forums - Sales Discussion - Street Fighter V sold 1.4 million, 600k less than expected

Capcom released financial info from the previous fiscal year. In it, they revealed that Street Fighter V sold 1.4 million copies from its launch until March 31st. In May of 2015, in a report for investors for last fiscal year, they predicted 2 million in sales. Essentially what that means is that they missed the mark by over half a million.

So, what do you guys think? Were they delusional for predicting 2 million in the first place? Was all of the negative buzz surrounding its slim single player modes the culprit? Or something else all together?

Fun fact, VGChartz has Street Fighter V at 690k as of April 30th... so either seriously impressive digital sales, or seriously impressive undertracking.

EDIT: I decided to check SteamSpy, and it said that it has ~156k owners. So if we pair that figure with VGChartz' 690k, we get over 845k, which still leaves 535k unaccounted for.

It could have easily hit 2 million if the game has more substance than the original Snake game on the Nokia 3210.

Didn't it ship 1.4 million?

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Yeah VGC article on it says shipped.

Does that mean No digital sales accounted for?

Call me crazy, but I think games in the fighting genre are doing it all wrong. It's one genre in the gaming industry that lends itself more to in game ads and micro transactions than any other genre. If I were capcom or namco this is what I would do.

Release the game and sell it for fully unlocked $60 one time purchase.

Simultaneously relase the game for free and give 5 free daily tokens that you depletes only when you lose a match but you can buy another 5 at anytime for $1. And throw in ads in between your character select and match load screens.

there may not be a lot of people willing to spend $60 on a fighting game. But a lot of people will download the game for free. And if they get hooked, they won't realize when they are spending $2 everyday just to play it after they run out of their daily 5 free tokens. And at the very least I get some ad money from ad impressions just from them trying things out.

A YouTube video makes around $2000 for every 1 million views it gets. Now imagine that the character select screen counts as 1 view and the screen between that and the match start counts as another view. It means for every fight a user will rack in two views for the game. 4 views if you count both users that get into the fight. Now multiply that by how many times a user fights in a day. And then by the millions of users that have the game cause they got it for free.

The game literally will be making 20k/day if just 1M people worldwide have 5 fights using only the 5 free tokens. And being that the game is free, a LOT more than 1 million people will be on there playing it.

it's shipped+ digital+PC, so it's probably undertracked but by as much as it looks.

the article says it sold 100k first week on steam so we know that much.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

I would have bought SFV if it weren't for all the negative press around it. Im not a huge fighting game fan aside from tekken but i thought SFV looked decent.

It's shipped, so I'm guessing there's a shit-ton of unsold inventory collecting dust on storeshelves.

Good. Considering I've bought Dead Rising 3, SFIV, SFV, RE 6, RE 1, and RE 0, this gen (and possibly 90%what they released last gen including Bionic Commando, Dark Void and Azura's Wrath), it's safe to say I love Capcom but what they did to SFV disgusts me.
