Forums - Gaming Discussion - I don't get it how adults can like games with kiddy cartoony look

It's just a thing of personal preference and doesn't have anything to do with age. Some people like light-hearted movies and games. The cartoon look just has a special feeling to it, it's abstract, it lets your imagination go wild. Some people prefer realistic topics, which is fine. But you should never ever judge someone just for their personal taste.

For a really long time I only played games with a somewhat realistic look. Then my son came along. Because Battlefield or Gears of War isn't quite the right entertainment for a new-born, I got some cartoony games over time. And I didn't expect it, but I enjoyed them like there's no tomorrow. I also discovered various cartoon shows which I really like. Gravity Falls is just great and I also absolutely love Phineas & Ferb. That stuff is hilarious!

Today I play Minecraft together with my son and I absolutely love it. In fact, it's way more fun than sitting alone at my console fraggin' other people in Battlefield or something. I'm really glad I made that experience. It really showed me that games with a "kiddy" look can enjoy anyone in any age. You just have to let them.

It's also the reason I am really looking forward to the next Nintendo console. I mean I still play realistic games. But right at this moment, "childish" games entertain me a whole lot more. If that means that I "never grow up" as someone mentioned in this thread, then so be it. I don't care as long as I'm having fun. Gaming is about fun for me, not about lifestyle. I don't have to make a statement with it. I just want to have a good time.

Also 'cartoony' != 'kiddy' in many cases. Is Conker your definition of a 'kiddy' game? It looks even more cartoony than the games you mentioned.

Some people never grow up I guess.

You should really reconsider your definition of "grow up" XD

The definition being used seems to be the same one that young boys use when they distinguish that all red toys are girly and as such pretend to be allergic to them to seem more manly, @OP I don't think that judging a book by it's cover is a great sign of being more mature or grown up, sure if you just enjoy games to be dark and gritty a la gears of war and such, that's fine, but like others mentioned in the thread I feel for you having missed out on some fantastic experiences simply because of the vessel they arrived in.

Could I ask does this also extend to movies? Do you also avoid watching films if they are animated simply because they are animated again and nothing to do with the story being told, have you seen Toy Story, Iron Giant, Lilo and Stitch etc. or would you think they all have nothing to offer you as a "grown up"?

This reminds me a friend the other day told me that yogurt is girly and only girls should eat it. It really just seems like people not being comfortable with themselves rather than actual preferences, cause I know this person thinks yogurt is nice, but it's "girly" so he won't have it smh.

There aint nothing wrong with cartoony graphics.

I see that some posters have a hard time distinguishing 'kiddy' and 'rated E'. Let me help you with examples:

Kirby = kiddy

SSX = NOT kiddy

What about when "Kiddy" characters invade the super serious worlds of things like SSX does it turn you off them?

Where does this lay on your scale of being able to enjoy the game, knowing that there are characters in it who's main colour palette isn't based on Grey and Manlyness.

I find it strange that you are unaware of the PC games that are like that.  They exist, believe it or not.  Many of them exist.

Alright, name me one kiddy 3D platformer PC centric game series.

That's awfully specific of a request.  Pretty sure you were saying "kiddy games" in general before, now you're talking about 3D platformers, which are uncommon on the PC in general.

I know that gameplay over visuals but for me all these Ratchet and Cland and Jak and Daxter and Nintendo games are cringe worthy. It's like if you had a decent car in some childish car body, it's still a childish car no matter how fast it can go and what functionalities it has.

Anyone who can appreciate different art styles in games such as "cartoony" is similar to someone who can walk into an art museum and appreciate the different forms of art.  They might not agree with all of it, but they can still appreciate it.  This is a sign is a versatile palette and higher congitive processing.  In layman's terms: NOT single minded.

Might have had an odd experience of someone making fun of him because he had a mouthful of creamy yogurt dripping down his face, made some comment that he felt it would be best to avoid looking like a facial victim again so just decided it best to avoid creamy loads in future rather than learning how to keep um in his mouth?

Maybe.... I'm just thinking that because I can't figure out any other reason you would put a gender preference to Yogurts lol, I'm fairly sure most TV adverts for things like Yop and Petit Filous here featured mostly Male children enjoying them more so than girls.
