Forums - Website Topics - Should VGC Have User Submitted News Articles?

There would just have to be a me position opened up. editors.

Obviously there are already editors on the site, but they are busy editing stuff for the site.

These would just be people not being paid, but chosen by admins as having superior grammar akills. unlike myaelf.

We had Members doing game reviews as well. That may be what I remember. Not sure what happened. It was a time of a lot of change. Plus as Machina said, Bretts brother , Deano? , and another guy I forget his name currently were off and on here. So changes were hard to come by. We used to have huge E3 events and the Gamrreqards and gamrtv and just lots of different stuff. But things change, people leave to maintain it all, etc.

Trucks will slowly bring things back and take other things away I am sure.

Wait, I'm a bit confused as to what youre saying. I'm sorry. Could you please clarify a bit?

I'm honestly content with the mega threads we currently have and the news spread between them along with the news sometimes going from one Mega thread to it's own forum topic.

Rumors and leaks will automatically be cut, but even so, I can see this going bothways

If this functions sort of like My Nintendo News, I think this would work very well, where the community will help post news bits and have them published for everyone to see

As for me, I don't use VGC as a source of news and will look at Nintendo Life and My Nintendo News for news instead.. Also, would stick to forums to post news bits that I think it worth the attention, but I might use this feature if it was available..

I definitely agree there.  I do think there should be restrictions on the kinds of news articles being submitted. I definitely don't want to see three dozen "news" articles on he said-she said NX rumors.

Yeah, the biggest thing is that the content would be curated and approved. We'd want the highest quality reports possible. I don't know how MNN does it, but I likened it more to a curated Buzzfeed. Buzzfeed has both user generated content, and content made by people who work there.  There is a clear delineation between which is which. Ideally, this would be the same way.

As for your last point, I really think that has a lot to do with the layout lol so I wouldn't expect a program like this to really get into the full spring of things until there was a layout change the put more emphasis and spotlight on the articles.

Yes, if done correctly, it could work out really well, but it all depends on whether users will be willing to contribute to this either as an editor or a normal poster that adds in news bits

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

Things are different now. Mega threads are not the norm over our history. Sure you had a huge smash thread back in the day and a few other 1-5 thousand post threads. But it was not until a year before the Wii U released that people really got into mega threads.

We have to rethink how the site is going and what members want. I am sure that despite having these mega threads, people would still like to post articles. User reviews, etc.

I'm not saying we should do away with any of that. No matter how many news articles are written, there will never be a better place to discuss the news than in the forums. But I do think that we'd be turning a bling eye to a lot of the site's potential if we didn't steer that passion and focus that into something that could drive more viewership. I don't think that user submitted news articles would take away from the mega threads, threads posting news articles, user review threads, etc., at all.

Since you feel that the site is different now, do you also think that the as it once was Game DB wouldn't work anymore because of that difference, or is it a different situation there?

I mean, I'm sure everyone is. Even I am, but that's not really what this is trying to address.

It's more trying to address the issue of news articles being posted in a timely manner. That's really difficult to achieve the way things are now, and it isn't really anyone's fault. It's just an issue of circumstance. There's obviously a desire to have news articles, or else we wouldn't be paying people to write them, so I can't imagine anyone is particularly pleased with the situation. I feel bad whenever I see Will post like a dozen articles withing the span of like 2 hours because he's trying to catch up with news he probably couldn't get to because all the writers are posting this stuff in their spare time, so I was suggesting this as a way to alleviate most of this.

Like I said to Spurge, I don't think this would effect the Mega Threads at all, because those serve a completely different purpose than this does.

Yeah, that would really be the most important part. I know I'd be more than willing to be an editor for a program like this, and seeing how many game DB admins we have on this site makes me believe that there are probably others who share this feeling. As for users submitting actual news, I can only speak for myself. I would be inclined to submit a few if the option was there, but I'm not sure who else would feel the same. I do know that if, under my proposed layout change, I came to VGC and saw news somewhere else on Pokemon Sun/Moon that I didn't see an article about here yet, I'd want to immediately submit something, but that's just me.

Trucks said that the incentive for Game DB was VG$, so there would hopefully be a similar incentive here, and hopefully that would work.

Well... VGC does take its time to publish news.
The biggest problem would be how to make it work. Just looking at how Writers write stuff, it seems like it would take a lot of work for Trucks to do.
Oh actually... yeah, it seems really hard. It's because of the way the site is built, and the "Writers section". And I dont even know what Machina and/or the rest of the team think on it...

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Personally I'm against it. We have the forums to copypasta articles from other sites and then argue about them. Plus we volunteer for thread creation and actually have an incentive to do it (GamrPoints).
Plus the need for editors acknowledges a bottleneck. By the time the editors get through the vast volume of material they receive there will already be a relevant thread up. This is assuming the contributors are paraphrasing and not copy/pasting.
I say let the writing team do their thing. The OC we have been getting from them is pretty good IMO (reviews and other interesting insights), and the sales analyses from Will are nice. I may be alone in this but I don't read the articles for the news - no offense to anybody but it will always come to the threads quicker and in relative quality. Way she goes

How so? I was actually hoping to get a writer's perspective on this.

Again, I want to make it clear that I don't think it's anyone's fault that the news doesn't always come out in a timely manner. I'm not trying to blame anyone. I think it's a tragedy of circumstance.

I was hoping that mod-approved volenteer editors of the same ilk as the Game DB Admins would help alleviate the difficulty of implementation. This way all of the user submitted articles would all be of a level of quality by default, meaning that no one would need to pick up the slack as much.

Don't we sort of get news threads mades daily? At least when there is new news posted. It may be directly copied, but I feel there is usually news posted on the site.
