Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft removes 8 studio's, but...

http://n4g.com/news/1874086/8-studios-removed-from-microsoftstudios-com-today

7 of these studio's produced kinect games, which haven't done anything in years. Don't see why people are calling it the end of xbox. Yes, I feel sad for the people who work for them, but this is chopping fat. Doesn't make me any happier, but I hope that we can see more games from the result of this.

Edit: Did a bit more research, turns out they're shifting them to other parts of the company (at least some of them anyway). So they're being repurposed.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

When you have a weak First Party, any studio is a pretty big loss. IMO

What Ice said.

Considering they apparently couldn't find a way to repurpose the studios to create relevant content for the Xbox brand today, I kind of question the strategy here. Limiting your number of viable first party studios to such a significant degree because you weren't ready to take a gamble on seeing what they could do under different parameters is a bit silly. Yeah, it costs money, but nothing was stopping them from setting the studios on small, slowly escalating projects as they created more content exclusive to the Xbox brand.

Jesus...All of that talent and MS couldn't think of anything else to do with them? I can't imagine what the moral at the remaining studios is like right now...

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

No, not really. Quality stuff is coming from MS 1st parties. Why employee weak studios when great 3rd parties can do the work?

MS and Sony both have strong titles thanks to 3rd parties.

Kind of a waste, why not restructure those studios so that they can just focus on create great 1st party exclusives that aren't used to sell Kinect but to push the system, add to its first party catalog, establish a strong library of 1st party games that, with enough effort, can eclipse Sony's, which would give you a crucial advantage over them?

No way can they ever recover from this. 8+ studios gone in 1 business day. Word is that the studios didn't even know until now, just last night lionhead studios was talking about the great dev progress they were making. In my opinion it kinda sounds like Phil Spencer wasn't behind these decisions and that it was maybe over his head.

MS is having less and less third party exclusives, and even less and less third party games (more and more PS4/PC games thanks to the PS4 lead). They need more first party : it was already the case before, it's even more the case now. They shouldn't close any studio not developing Halo, Gears of War or Forza.

These games' sales are even decreasing, so no, MS doesn't have strong first party games (at least saleswise) and not a lot of strong third party games either. Their exclusive line up was already not that good and it's shrinking.

Source?

I prefer quality over quantity but MS has like 4-5 (AAA) studios . That's not a lot, especially when 3 of them are locked into a single franchise. As much as I didn't like Lionhead, them being closed is a loss, we didn't get to see the new IP they were supposed to be working on, it's not like they were talentless, they could've done something good. 3rd parties are awesome but....

Great 1st party + Great 3rd party > Weak 1st party + Great 3rd party

They should have both and I feel like they haven't been trying in the first party area
