Personally I don't see how it can be joined alone OR with others, but that's just me.
I found Destiny practically the definition of bland. The whole thing was just a joyless grind, devoid of creativity or depth.

Needless to say, I don't recommend it myself. But hey, maybe your tastes are different than mine.

Play Warframe, it's basically free Destiny with poorer production values and better gameplay. It's great for solo, at least for my tastes.

Eh I played through a fair chunk of destiny alone, it was achievable, but could be boring at times. The biggest problem with joining randoms was that most people were already max level and doing raid runs at max level, so I could never really find randoms for level 13 stuff ect. I really dont know how I felt about destiny in the end....

Kind of highlights the problems with Destiny if a 3rd party had to set up a website so people could play a raid when they don't have 5 friends who also happen to own the game.

 

On subject, I mostly played on my own. the PvP side was okay, just like any other MP. Solo story is fine just unimaginative and the other MP side... well I never did a raid so... but then really I wasn't really looking for a MMO which it is.
