Well I heard about the adjustments things too, but I am a little bit ignorant as to what kind of adjustments VG Chartz practices. Would one of the moderators be willing to clarify how these adjustments are made?
The whole issue is there will always be discrepancies. It's a fact of life that if your not getting data from certain suppliers vs. other suppliers, you won't get full, honest information. Thats what extrapolation and correction is for. GAF will become irrelevant for sales information in 6 months. That's one of GAF's main draws (the only reason I go there). The main issue with GAF is that they bash and ban ioi because he "provides bad information", which is true if you consider NPD the golden standard of sales (which they aren't. They're the only data source we have, and there is no objection to their data). However, instead of trying to do their own thing, and counter his information by creating their OWN data and WORK on data websites and tracking firms, they just hold to NPD as being the god of videogames. Is VGCharts inaccurate? Yes. Is NPD and the GAF people? Yes. Media Create is about the only one that I really think is close to what's real, but even then, they aren't 100% perfect because they don't get 100% data.

As usual, an excellent post from MrStickball. He pretty much sums it all up. The VGCharts hate is coming from more than just NeoGAF though. People seem to have this misguided idea that NPD numbers are actual sales numbers and not estimates. Whenever someone derides VGCharts they always say the numbers are just guesses or made up or just estimations. All sales numbers provide by outside tracking firms are estimations.
When someone starts to hate you for no reason, you must be doing something right, and much better than they are.
Is that a quote or did you make that up yourself? It sounds like a very wise saying

I take the view that all these sales numbers are used by us to give us an idea of how well a particular game or console is selling. If my Wii figures are 30k too low one month and 40k too high another month then does it really make a big difference? Wii has sold around 7 million, 360 is close to 10m and PS3 is around 3.5m. That should be enough for most people to see which is "winning", how sales are split by region and which is selling more quickly. For anybody who wants to get a 100% accurate figure for how many Wii's (for example) have been sold worldwide as of today then it doesn't exist. You could probably get a 95% accurate figure if you were Nintendo, knew how many you had shipped and had good feedback from retailers. If you were an analyst you could probably get 90% accurate by buying NPD / Chart Track / GFK / Media Create figures and adding them up - this is limited by the (very good but not perfect) accuracy of those trackers. If you want an 85% accurate estimate then use the numbers on this site which are the best you will get anywhere without paying for data. We get this accuracy by a number of means, many of which are kept under wraps for good reason and many of which we are improving more and more every week. GAF don't like what I do because it represents doing something different. It is successful and getting a lot of attention. It is more and more accurate and extensive with each week that passes. Even if the figures were only 50% accurate you will still find nowhere else that tries to compile data from all round the world, allows you to track trends and make comparisons. As I have said on a number of occasions, we do not use NPD, Media Create, Famitsu, Chart Track, GFK or any other tracking firms data. We of course reference any public info they release and check back with our own data to get a feel for our accuracy, but the numbers are based off our own research and contacts within the industry and are independent to those tracking services. Some see this as a bad thing and use it as a reason to avoid our figures (your choice). Others see it as a huge and exciting innovation, something that isn't even attempted elsewhere (even on multi-million dollar websites like gamespot and ign) and something with massive potential. It isn't particularly difficult what I do (there are some very elegant algorithms and sophisticated statistical analysis behind a lot of it but not something that anyone with a technical background wouldn't be able to do), it just takes a huge amount of time and dedication to get it all to work. Something that I wish people would support and be more behind on other websites rather than find ways to bash and knock down all the time just because it "scares" them. |
It's obvious really, they feel your threatening their $$$.
And if that's what they feel then they are scared that as time is going by your charts are getting more and more accurate and the more accurate they get the more irrelevant their sites/business's are.
Simply put, they are jealous.
I back this site utterly and completely, and appreciate the efforts put into the charts.
My prediction: This site will get so popular you'll have an official complicated Law suite on your hand that will threaten all our possible posts and reading pleasures, however, since all this data is of your own research they'll never be able to accomplish those greedy desires.
Well you still haven't answered my question. Several threads have commented that when you make your estimates, that once the NDP numbers come out those numbers change. I can understand why that would happen, but an answer as to exactly what cause said change? I haven't had a chance to look myself but I can understand why you would do something like this.
What're all your views on NexGenWars.com, I only found this site because everyone on that site were going on about how the Wii numbers are biased here. But aren't the 360 numbers a little biased there?
Personally, i dont see how the Wii Numbers are biased here... VGChartz - 7.09m NextGen - 7,164,990 theyre both very similar... so i dont get where the bias comment comes from about the numbers.. I still dont get how their Xbox 360 numbers are so high... they changed them to 10 million when Microsoft said they shipped 10 million, not sell them... About this other site, neogaf or whatever its called... never ehard of it. I went to their website just now and i didnt particularly like it. The main reason why i started going to this site regularly is because the homepage is laid out well and its easy to see how the consoles are doing. I then decided to join the forum because i started visiting the site so much, and in the two months ive been here the number of people has shot up quite a bit.

I don't really know about that site, but their Wii numbers are higher than those here, so why should this site be Wii biased?
