Maybe it was just a case no one of Egyptian, or nothern African, descent auditioned for the roles.

Oh no, they tried.  They were just told by the production company that they were going with a white cast anyway.  What makes it worse that is the exact same situation happened with Exodus: Gods and Kings (also taking place in Egypt) just 2 years ago.  The producers bluntly stated that they never even considered non-white actors because they wouldn't get the film financed otherwise.

Really? there was a quote direct from the producers for this? And that actual Egyptians auditioned? That kind of thing would have been bigger than just 'people noticed' that the wiki page states. Just wondering. Seems the Egyptian director wouldn't have gone for that if it was the case.

Hmm, pie.

Google "Exodus: Gods and Kings Whitewashing".  You'll get far more information than the Wiki page provides.

I was looking up Gods of Egypt. But by looking at what articles I found it mentioned a lot about big names to sell the film not specifically white but sadly the big names are white. The idea that 1 big actor could sell the films and then all other roles are filled with the appropriate castings though, would this still be wrong? A big name doesn't need to be white, just a big name. You'd think Ridley Scott's name would be enough.

Hmm, pie.

Are you really suggesting that TFA made that amount of money by having a pair of non-white male leads? really? Star Wars would have made money even if the reviews where awful (bad reviews never hurt the Transformers films) it's Franchise not cast that make the film which on one havd means you can cast anybody and make money and on the other means the actors/actresses are easily replacable.

It also means audiences will pay money to see someone other than white men in lead roles.

I'm really looking forward to the day that a movie like Gods of Egypt could be case with actual Egyptians in the lead roles.

So you want more US companies to export jobs? because there is a much smaller pool of north Africans to choose from than white in the US.

Besides Egypt probably needs to become safe and stabilise before just anyone from there should be allowed into the US.

The new cast has nothing to do with the success of the movie.

It certainly hasn't. However I think the key for many is, it also hasn't hindered their box office takings.

That said, I do question motives in such things. As when things are based on merit, how does quota fit on? You could argue that it's racist to demand that people of certain ethnicities are nominated on the grounds of their race rather than ability.

I've not seen every film in the last year to have an informed input. But I think it's a dangerous game to say omg no black actors in an award shortlist is instantly racist.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I think the issue is more with the lack of good roles for POC than with racial bias from members of the Academy. Nonetheless, I support the "boycott".

This is why I like free market and laugh at government control.

In a free market the movie is judged by the public and they can or not support it with their wallet and show if they are against or not bothered the practices used by the company. No need for long essays blaming all people because of it. We already have a lot of hating folks in here that if had power would regulate the industry to only put things they like on the market. But for some reason people think it's a good idea to give that power to government. Because government usually make the worst decision and based on back door deals that are very anti-freedom and customer.

I'm saying people are willing to go watch movies with diverse casts. Star Wars was just one of three examples of huge hits last year alone that I listed.

Straight outta Campton bombed outside of the US. And while F&F has a diverse cast everyone's watching the movie for Paul Walker who passed away and Vin Diesel playing a slightly tanned Italian.

Also remember, these films, while entertain, are not Oscar worthy. You compare it along side some of the Oscar nominated 'Best Picture' or some of the performances by the actors and they are a joke. Yet that's not their job. Star Wars and F&F are there to entertain. Look at all the superhero films, while they are very well made films (I think Cap 2 was amazing) I would say it was Oscar worthy other than maybe a few special effects.

Hmm, pie.

When has foreign sales been a criteria for an Oscar?

As far as I know even sales in domestic have been a criterea, but certainly success WW isn't important. Even most profit reports focus on domestic theaters.
