Ok so we've got in this thread "It's XB1 and 360 combined" and "It was heavily discounted" as 2 ways people are trying to downplay this now. Any other reasons?

Did Phil Spencer buy 500k copies for himself now or some shit? Is that what the next attempt is going to be?

Come on, people.

"Keeping the context in mind" is different from "downplaying".

The game failed at launch, that's not a question. The game was discounted after this failed launch, that's not a question either (after a quick research, you were easily able to find it at $40 in December or even less, one month after release). And now they announce "okay" numbers.

If you try to analyze a bit, it is interesting to think about the impact of the Christmas discounts on the sales. "Woohoo, awesome sales numbers!!!" for a -90% Steam sales game is irrelevant for example. So are celebrations for average numbers after a sales period without any more informations. If they had to give up any profitability for this game in order to reach "okay" numbers, that's not a good thing. You can also say that Knack sold really well in Japan, but if you forget the fact that it was bundled with every console, you can't really understand anything about the situation of the game...

They could be lying... jkjk

What an amazing achievement for xb platforms. *achievement unlocked: 1 million*

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

Very interesting. That means Tomb Raider hasn't sold as bad as November numbers would have lead us to believe.

The first Tomb Raider sold 3.4 million units in its first month. Roughly 1,36 million on Xbox consoles.
Now they're saying it sold over 1 million on Xbox consoles in about 2 months.

Perhaps it took almost two months instead of one, but those aren't bad numbers at all. Especially considering the games it launched next to.

That's accross two platforms though. Not that impressive.

As were Black Ops III, Star Wars Battlefront, Fallout 4 its just the usualt BF week and holiday price drop sales.

So you wanted to come in and do anything you can to downplay the news? I'm willing to bet it hit over a million on Xbox One with 360 selling the lesser amount. However good tactical move on the downplay, make sure to hit up all the other Xbox One threads, some new ones you have not hit yet. Try to be creative, we are counting on you.

There's no need to downplay the news, 1 million is a small sales number.

Yet that sales mark is celebrated every single time on here when other games do it.

^^^This, also Halo 4 back then was also discounted during the holidays even though it was selling amazingly well. He obviously has no idea what's he talking about LOL.

^^^This as well, so there shouldn't be any problem with this thread, except for a few certain people.

Square was disappointed with 4 million combined sales. 1 million is a good start, but if Square's budget was similar this time around then it will still need PC and probably PS4 to make a decent enough profit for this iteration of Lara to get a 3rd crack at the market. If it gets to 3 million on Xb one then square could be willing to look at another timed exclusive on Xb one, but probably only 6 months unless MS stumps up more cash.

Or Square already got their pockets full with the MS deal and they didn't need a sales deadline for Tomb Raider this time. The question that remains, considering the game sold over one million units, is if it was profitable for Microsoft.

highly unlikely square got paid enough to make this game profitable for them after just 1 million in sales if all MS gets in return is just 3 month's total exclusivity and 1 year console exclusivity. If Square wanted to be profitable at 1 million in sales they would have needed to give MS permanent Xbox exclusivity. Not being profitable at 4 million in sales for the reboot means what, a cost to market of $180 million?  MS paid Square $140 million odd for a piddling 3 month's full exclusivity? I don't think so. MS might have money to throw around, but the execs aren't stupid with money. An investment still needs to at least theoretically make a financial case. And considering MS needed to go to considerable lengths to keep holiday sales flat year on year instead of down, for MS it seems like paying Square $50 million for this exclusivity deal would be financially questionable.

So I think a more realistic assumption is that MS optimistically hoped for about 3 million in game sales on Xbox, and MS paid Square the balance between 3 million in sales and break even. Which is probably about 2 million in sales. What that does is make Pc and PS 4 sales almost purely profit as long as Xbox sales reaches about 3 million, which it could possibly achieve wishbone decent start it's had.

Yes, and? Do you even understand what I'm talking about?

So, Black Ops 3 and Battlefront were discounted, so the TR discounts didn't affect the game's "amazing" sales and profitability?

Wut?

I can be interpreted as downplaying.  Or it can be interpreted as clarifying.  Actually, what Ruler pointed out is good to know.  Better to know the truth to not potentially overhype the issue only to end up being disappointed.  It's already happened too many times with Xbox One supporters hanging on to every letter spoken by the Microsoft execs.
