On topic: well, I only see it as the most important game in the platforming genre, other genres had their own important games long before that.

• "Colossal Cave (Adventure)", "Zork" and "Mystery House" in the text adventure / interactive fiction genre.
• "King's Quest" and "Maniac Mansion" in the graphic adventure genre
• "Ultima", "Wizardry" and "The Bard's Tale" in the RPG genre
• "Pong", "Track & Field" and "Epyx Summer Games" in the sport game genre.
• "Pitstop" and "Pole Position" in the racing genre.
• "Space Invaders" and "Pacman" in the arcade / action genre.

Sigh... Well, I like to think of Super Mario Bros. to the video game industry like how Superman is the forerunner of DC Comic or Spiderman as forerunner of Marvel Comics. As for Wii Sports and Mine craft, they're more like New 52 or whatever other reboot. You know what I mean?

Yeah, but, are we like 'Yay, more app games please?  I'll definitely pay $50 per game.'  Or are we more like, 'yay, free game, sure I'll put down a dollar for free letters.' 

Super Mario Bros. has more due to it than those games.  And just because they're new we can go that way, but look at how WOW isn't mentioned anymore as compelling GOAT.

Only game that can compete with SMB for influence is Pong, SMB is the first modern game and inspired all sorts of games that went on to inspire others and even genres so IGN is just stating something obvious.

Yes, they are correct. It's not my favorite game/s by any means but I do know its greatness.

Wii Sports? Please explain how that could be the most important game ever created?

Pacman, Space Invaders, Asteroids, would all be better picks, as they were what started the mainstreamification (I just made that word up) of gaming.
