I have always said don’t judge a book by its cover or in this case a video game. Splatoon managed to surpass the expectations of Nintendo and sell more copies leaving CEO Saturo Iwata surprised. The Wii U exclusive which launched at the end of May, managed to sell 1 million units within the first month of release, which is quite a feat.

Interestingly enough, for the first time since its release, the game slipped from the top 10 selling video games in the UK. Iwata was all praise for the game. Iwata told the following to the shareholders at Nintendo’s latest Annual General Meeting: “Having received high recognition from our consumers for its novelty, this title’s sell-through sales reached 1 million units in less than a month from its release. We feel very grateful for this, since our view was not so optimistic prior to release, for it being a non-series title.”

Have you played Splatoon? What do you think of the game? Let us know in the comments below.

More than a million copies sold in less than a month from a new IP on the smallest userbase of this gen? People thought it would do great, but those numbers are surprisingly good.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Im glad a new IP is doing so good, especially a new nintendo IP

Yeah, I was confident it would. A strong aesthetic (always important for the Nintendo audience), an intruiguing new gameplay mechanic and a big marketing campaign. All of the key elements for success.

That's why he needs to be fired.

Let's hope this leads to Nintendo making more new IPs and take some risks from time to time.

I'm honestly surprised it did so well. I was thinking 1m by the end of the year was optimistic.

All hail Japan.

Hmm...from the marketing push it got, I thought they at least must have been aware that it had the potential to be big. I hope it makes them a little more adventurous when it comes to fresh new IPs and good marketing.

Humm so, in the poll, nearly 70% of guys expect Splatoon to sell 1.1 million in less than one month?
...Strange, i don't remember those guys 1 year ago...
