Forums - Sony Discussion - Bloodborne Sales Success Took Sony By Surprise

In an interesting interview with MCV, which we highly recommend to check out, the boss of the UK branch of Sony Computer Entertainment, Fergal Gara admitted that the highly acclaimed PS4 exclusive Bloodborne, exceeded their expectations in terms of sales.

"It did surprise us, we had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did – and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative."

"I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us. We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximise its potential."

Hmm, that's interesting. Did the Souls games not sell as well before?

It's always been a relatively niche series (though very successful within that niche). Bloodborne is too really, but it's sold a fair bit more than many of us were expecting.

It shouldn't, it was the first highly critical exclusive on the console, usually sales can build around great products, namely when it has no rivals.

Really? I thought it was going to sell pretty well myself. There seemed to be a lot of hype for it, at least on the site.

I got Bloodborne day one and loved it.

The critical reception and sales are well deserved.

The Souls series have always been million sellers, usually around 2 to 3M. It's that Bloodborne sold 1 million in 10 days, where it took Souls series on 3 platforms a few months to reach that milestone.

No surprise really there hasn't been anything else really worth it so far this gen so everyone was just sitting on there saving the past year or so.

A lot of publishers are getting surprised by how fast their games are selling. Which should tell them and the gaming community that the industry is healthier than they're letting it out to be.

I suppose they already thought the game would be highly successful but not as successful as it became now. Bloodborne and the Souls series are great games. They deserve all the praise and they're getting more popular with each release.
