Seriously? What's with this question always coming up? I mean it's kind of obvious.

Why does PS4 exist in Thailand? New Zealand? Nigeria? South Africa? Ukraine? India?

The answer is the exact same.

It's a bit different in all of those countries, they're interested but they're just small and you get what is expected.

In japan not only are they not interested but it's a huge territory, lots of retailers to organise distribution for a decent sized country.

Selling 1 console in a sample of 100 people is better than selling 1 console in a sample of 10,000 people.

Some of those countries I listed are huge territories as well, in some cases significantly larger than Japan is.

Do you mean to say the video game market is smaller in those countries? Is it though? Only if you are looking at the total market, what if you only look at the potential Xbox/PS4 market though? They'd be about the same wouldn't they. Hence if it makes sense for PS4 to release in those countries despite it being almost guaranteed the sales will be significantly lower than elsewhere then it would also make sense for the Xbox One to release in Japan.

I'm not talking about land mass or squara miles, I'm talking about videogame market. If any of those countries were a bigger than/similar territory to Japan it would be known.

We know the potential market, Japan alone can allow for consoles to sell millions, even 10's millions. If your console is selling 200/w in a market like that of course people are going to ask why they're even there.

If you can sell millions to over 10/20/30 million in Nigeria and only sell 200 weekly then I'd say the exact same thing.

A sale is a sale... so unless MS is losing serious money selling on Japan they shouldn't stop... and also they are trying to keep support there and have some japaneses games released that could interest people in other regions... I rather have a company losing money by giving good support to my gaming needs than a company only collecting money playing safe.

If they can make money than do it, but I can imagine they have a lot of Employee's in a big gaming territory such as Japan I think they're staying out of pride rather than an economic insentive.

Yup....PS4 running away with the win this gen. Only thing that matters now is if Nintendo and Microsoft can at least eek a profit out of whatever marketshare PS4 leaves them. Basically this is the 6th gen, but with Xbox One doing better then the original Xbox at the very least.

Serious observation: While I am sure diehard PS fans have zero problems with a repeat monopoly of the PS2, this confirms a personal theory that when PS wins a gen, they literally don't leave any room for competition to thrive. Nintendo will turtle and stick to just 1st party, and MS simply can no longer sustain their spending/expanding.

At least in the 7th gen, all 3 companies thrived in their own respects. That IMO is how it should have been. Before people rebuttal me concerning my Xbox bias, yes 360 had a upper hand for the majority of the gen, but it certainly was no monopoly, as PS3 controlled mainland Europe/Japan, with Nintendo going after a different demographic all together.

I dunno, call me someone who has a nostalgic soft spot for Nintendo and wants to see Xbox One selling better then it currently deserves.

And for the seventh gen, Sony really messed up with the price. What I'm getting at is, is Sony the only one that can prevent Sony from dominating?  I think it's valid based on the last 4 gens.

MS iirc has a pretty small Japanese team , and most likely like in china have some type of distribution partner , the main focus is liasoning with Japanese studios, and even though every one knows that focus is the west , having Xbone retail there under the MS banner while financially irrelevant is  there primarily because of it's symbolism.

Yeah, so true, when Sony is on the ball with the PS brand they DOMINATE the market.

Well...not really true.  7th gen for Sony was anything but thriving.  Literally spent the gen building their network infrastructure, and new IP's to give them great momentum going into 8th gen.  Losing massive massive amts of money on the PS3, isn't what I'd call thriving.

this isn't really the kind of money that makes MS lose their sleep... and they could always cut down costs using their SW distribution people.
