Forums - Sales Discussion - Cognitive dissonance: Wii U won't reach 25 million, but PS3 will reach Wii lifetime.

Neither will happen, the PS4 has killed off the PS3's momentum and PS3 has hit it's lowest profit/sales balance point, and price cuts will not generate sufficient sales to counter the lower profit. Wii U will probably be flat YOY at the end of this year but I still see it's replacement hitting in 2016 and Wii U sales will collapse after that.

PS3 will prob end up at 90mil, and Wii U at 15 million.

I feel like 20 million will be sort of decent if the Wii U can end at that.

Not even. If the Wii U sells  17 million by the time the next console drops i'd be surprised. This console is  definitely going to be the worst selling Nintendo console of all time.

Nobody; except few believes PS3 will cross 100 million. On the contrary majority of people believes Wii U wont cross 20 million. I dont get the OP.

PS3 has the benefit of being a PS and Plus and Now and even vue.

At a lower price it can chug along for a while still. As long as it beings in users to PS services there's reason to keep it going. U is flat out dead the second Nintendo officially announced their next hardware.

Im sure sony has a formula that says when its time to let PS3 out to pasture.  It may not be for a while yet.

I don't know if people still hold these beliefs, in tandem, but I do know people held them at one point. I want to explain why it should induce cognitive dissonance to hold these two beliefs.

1. The Wii U and PS3 are both averaging about the same number of sales currently. According to vgchartz, up until the middle of March - the Wii U has sold 457,519. The PS3 has sold 497,512. Last year the Wii U sold 3,674,351 and the PS3 3,547,908. If they maintain similar sales, and live similar lifetimes, both of which are very reasonable assumptions, then they should sell about the same for the rest of their respective lifetimes.*

2. By the bolded proposition, then if you believe the PS3 will sell 15.6 million to reach the Wii, then so shall the Wii U sell 15.6 million to reach 25 million lifetime sales, outselling the Gamecube.

3. The converse is also true. If you believe Wii U will reach 25 million, then you must also believe the PS3 will reach Wii sales. This is unless you think PS3 sales will drop off heavily, which they shouldn't since the PS3 is still getting new releases and has room for another price-cut, or that Wii U sales will improve greatly while PS3 sales will remain the same.

*The exception to this is if you believe the PS3 will exceed the sales of the Wii U or will outlive it. If you believe this, then please substantiate such a belief in this thread, if you want to.

< In my opinion, neither of these things will happen. Wii U won't reach 25 million, and PS3 won't reach Wii sales.>

Well PS3 every year sell less and less than previous, on other hand for Wii U last year was better than previous (2014>2013) and for now this year seems better than last.

PS3 next 5 years need to have average 3m sales per year in order to reach Wii numbers, I can't see that at all, this year probably will be less than 3m, and every next year less than previous.

For Wii U I cant see that can get to 20m LT with current sales.

Sony will cut off support in the 10th year. Microsoft only follows Sony.

Third parties will keep it alive. COD or fifa and other developers will keep releasing games. Longevity is a great option for fans who cant or want to upgrade next gen.

I'll be surprised if the ps3 reaches 90mln units sold, as most people here I think, so yes, ps3 won't get to 100mln sold and wii u won't sell more than 20mln unless something unpredictable happens.

Ps3 will not reach more than 95 mill max..

WiiU will most likely reach 25 mill.. i think it will do more than 30 mill..

First remember last gen.. nothing is set in stone..

I know a lot of people.. (mostly people not liking Nintendo) who think Nintendo will soon abandon WiiU.. that does nor making it true.. for all we know and what "clever" people should think.. is that WiiU will be (alone) on the market same time as other Nintendo consoles.. that's until other i proven.. period..

AND people kidding them self.. that Nintendo don't have any "biggames" "price cuts" "new type of games" "new type of apps" and that the home brew people will not go crazy when WiiU is "open"

What can i say.. "you are living in a dreamworld"

WiiU will be more than 15 mill this cristmas.. and next year will be even better.. you can take that to the bank
