Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Ocarina of Time ever Be Surpassed and When?

No. Although I wish a game like Zelda U could do it, there will never be another jump such as 2D to 3D that will blow critics' and consumers' minds alike.

Widely seen as better, probably never.....but DooM, SoTN, and Super Metroid say hello.  In all honesty, a lot of people like to talk about nostalgia, but I genuinely don't think "good" games by today's standards are on the same level as "good" games that are widely considered tops of all time.  Play Callof Duty and play DooM and tell me which is a better game.  Play Guacamelee and play Super Metroid, SoTN and tell me which is better,  etc...but opinions

Nevermind, didn't read a portion of post.

It probably won't... a lot of it is based on the time it was released and now nostalgia. If ocarina of time was released as a completely new game in 2015 (with 2015 level graphics) that no one had never heard of it wouldn't get a metacritic above 90. I'm not saying it's a bad game, games just age like everything else. Lots of people have very fond memories of Ocarina of Time and it already has a stellar reputation but it's definitely not nearly as perfect as people say even if blinded by fond memories.

For the time it was absolutely incredible.

we could say the same about every game!, today Skyrim would be a fetch quests fest with bad animations!

Exactly, that was my point. ^^

If people take off their nostalgia goggles, then OoT wouldn't be considered the greatest game of all time. But GOAT is so subjective that this question can never be answered.

The gaming industry is a lot different today, especially when it comes to review, even games that are better than it won't get a score near it..

It's hard to pass a classic once it reaches this level. It's almost a "Citizen Kane" level of legend. But it could hopefully be surpassed. Maybe this November ;)

It's funny you mention Citizen Kane. I actually asked this question a few years ago, framing the conversation in terms of Citizen Kane and Vertigo: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=148928&page=1

OoT is still the game most widely considered to be the greatest of all time in most annual GOAT game countdowns. Obviously opinions differ and you might think it has already been surpassed, but the question is - when do you think a game will come along that will surpass OoT as far as being more widely considered as the greatest game ever?

Yeah many times over:

FF7

MGS

Shadow of the Colossus

Half Life 2

The Last of Us

and soon Bloodborne

See, this is why we can't have nice things. I'd rather have you pick FF8, MGS2, Ico, (I'm alright with Half Life 2) and Uncharted 2, but instead, we end up not agreeing and thus OoT remains the best until we can sort this out :P
