Forums - Sales Discussion - PS4 is about to surpass Wii's highest market share

Wii almost managed it against two consoles that would end up selling almost 90mn each... competition has changed :).

Except the Wii isn't even close to 40 let alone 50 percent against those Twp consoles....

I expect 60%... And I would say that before the adjustments PS4 was over 68,3% during holiday end.

I think it will be around 60 - 65% overall, but that is only because Xbox will maintain a decent market in the US. The rest of the world I expect it to be close to 80% when its all said and done.

The launch of PlayStation Vue in the next few weeks should push it to the high end of 50% world wide quite quickly.

Unfortunately it will only achieve greater market share because last gen all 3 did great while this gen 2 are going to decline while 1 will increase. WiiU is the big dropoff (as much as I wish it and X1 would switch places marketshare wise) and will open the door to 50% market share.

Wii U's poor sales will help PS4 to get 60% or more market share easily. Since only competition PS4 has is from Xbox One. I think it can get higher is Sony plays its cards smartly.

I reckon final percentage will be between a lot higher for this gen by the end (60-65%) and for the following reasons

1. WiiU is a non event this generation, it will not have any effect on the numbers and will continue to track badly against the PS4.
2. MSFT will not stay in this generations race as long as Sony plan to. I can see them bowing out to release a new version console around 2018/2019 so with Sony being the only one pushing the console long term this gen they have it wrapped up.
3. Game line up for PS4 is arguably stronger than for Xbox1.
4. Snowball effect, the larger the marketshare, the more likely people looking to buy a console will be drawn to it.
5. Whist hardware differences exist they should become more apparent in the latter stages of the consoles life.
6. Price cuts boosted the XBOX but haven't as yet appeared officially from Sony, when these come out it will boost sales and marketshare.

Enjoy it while it last lol

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

People saw the same thing on X360 because it was launched 1 year earlier and the previous Xbox had lasted only 4 years...and guess what, even being less powerful than the PS3 and having no blu-ray player, it was replaced on the same year (2013). It was 8 years as the main console against 7 years (6.5 on Europe) of the PS3 (which was supposed to last 10 years). The thing is when one launches a new console the other must follow, otherwise it can't compete. PS4 won't be able to compete with Xbox 4. Then Sony will have to launch PS5.

Hardware differences become less apparent on the latter stages of the console's life because the technology is already outdated. And again the previous generation proves it. Metal Gear Solid 4 wasn't possible on the X360. Metal Gear Rising and Ground Zeroes were. GTA IV was significantly worse on the PS3. GTA V wasn't (same thing with Batman, The Elder Scrolls and many others). In the latter stages of both consoles, Call Of Duty wasn't state-of-the-art anymore and exclusives were becoming more about games like Kinect JoyRide, ModNation Racers and Sports Champions while the big surprise in sales was Minecraft. No one (neither gamers nor developers) was concerned about the graphical differences anymore.

I just found this fact to be interesting.

Wii has reached its highest market share on the spring 2009 at 48.4%.

PS4 is now about 48.3% and growing. Where will it end?

65% by the end of life cycle.

Impressive. It could have been more if the home console market did not decline in Japan
