2. MSFT will not stay in this generations race as long as Sony plan to. I can see them bowing out to release a new version console around 2018/2019 so with Sony being the only one pushing the console long term this gen they have it wrapped up.
...
5. Whist hardware differences exist they should become more apparent in the latter stages of the consoles life.

People saw the same thing on X360 because it was launched 1 year earlier and the previous Xbox had lasted only 4 years...and guess what, even being less powerful than the PS3 and having no blu-ray player, it was replaced on the same year (2013). It was 8 years as the main console against 7 years (6.5 on Europe) of the PS3 (which was supposed to last 10 years). The thing is when one launches a new console the other must follow, otherwise it can't compete. PS4 won't be able to compete with Xbox 4. Then Sony will have to launch PS5.

Hardware differences become less apparent on the latter stages of the console's life because the technology is already outdated. And again the previous generation proves it. Metal Gear Solid 4 wasn't possible on the X360. Metal Gear Rising and Ground Zeroes were. GTA IV was significantly worse on the PS3. GTA V wasn't (same thing with Batman, The Elder Scrolls and many others). In the latter stages of both consoles, Call Of Duty wasn't state-of-the-art anymore and exclusives were becoming more about games like Kinect JoyRide, ModNation Racers and Sports Champions while the big surprise in sales was Minecraft. No one (neither gamers nor developers) was concerned about the graphical differences anymore.
